The Chief of the General Staff (CGS) is the professional head of the Fatrean Army. The CGS is a member of the Army Board and Defence Council. The post is immediately subordinate to the Chief of the Defence Staff. The post is aided by the Deputy Chief of the General Staff.

Responsibilities
The Chief of the General Staff is the professional head of the army, with responsibility for developing and generating the military capability of the army and for maintaining the fighting effectiveness, efficiency and morale of the service. The CGS reports to the Chief of the Defence Staff and has a right of direct access to the defence secretary and the prime minister. The CGS is a member of the Defence Council and the Army Board.

- Conduct of Defence Business within the Army
- Leading Senior Management of the Army
History
The post of CGS was created on 16 February 2024. It was established with the foundation of the Fatrean Army and is the oldest position specifically in the army.
Appointment
In their capacity as commander-in-chief, the monarch appoints the CGS. This is done on the nomination of the prime minister. However, the prime minister usually nominates candidates based on the recommendation of the defence secretary or Chief of the Defence Staff. It is expected that candidates should be a senior army officer ranking at least at Brigadier General level or above but exceptions can be made for some Colonels.
