The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), sometimes the Chief of Imperial Defence or Chief of Defence, is the professional head of the Gronean Imperial Armed Forces and the most senior non-ministerial imperial government advisor on defence. The CDS is based at the Ministry of Defence. The Chief of the Defence Staff is the highest ranking officer to currently serve in the armed forces and they chair the Imperial High Command - the highest military body in the empire.
The CDS is aided by the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff.

History
The office of Chief of the Defence Staff is the oldest position within the armed forces besides that of commander-in-chief, which is held by the imperial monarch. The office of CDS was established on 7 September 2023, and is the highest ranked officer of the armed forces.
Appointment
The method of appointing a CDS is similar to that of an imperial government minister. The CDS is appointed by the Monarch of Gronea on the advice and nomination of the Chancellor. However, sometimes the imperial defence minister submits nominations directly to the monarch instead of the chancellor.
Candidates are usually a general officer, air officer or part of the admiralty currently holding a senior defence position within the armed forces.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Chief of the Defence Staff include:
- Leading defence,
- Setting strategy for defence including the development of the Armed Forces,
- Conduct of current operations,
- Leading relations with foreign armed forces,
- Advising the Imperial Government on defence,
