The Republic of Sauna Guastriagua, more commonly known as Sauna Guastriagua, is an unrecognized state, often refferd to as a micronation in the Caribbean. The nation was founded by a group of 16 traders crossing through the Panama Canal, to give people on ships a break. It has never been seen as a real nation, and has never been involved in any external wars. It was unable to join the United Nations in 1945.
The nation is a presidential republic, where elections are held every 2 years. The current President is Folcard Brownlock.
The nation has no macronational allies, but is micronationally allied with the Horizon Islands and Panera.
Etymology
The nation's name and culture is a mix of words from multiple cultures, as the nation was founded by 16 people from 7 countries. The name is based on Spanish, Esperanto, and French.
History
In 1919, traders from China, Australia, Japan, The Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), Siam (Now Thailand), and British Mauritius (Now Mauritius) who were all Travelling on the same ship, decided to sail up the Carribean coast of Central America, and found a group of islands which were inhabited by no life whatsoever. The traders, finding the land beautiful and very fertile, decided to sell their shipment aboard the ship to Dutch traders who stopped at the island 2 months later, turning the island into a kingdom, ruled by Caradas Underhill, a Mauritian of Scottish descent. Underhill, being 28 at his coronation, ruled until 1953, when at the age of 62 he was overthrown by communist rebels. Underhill escaped to Panama, where he died in 1972. The nation was ruled by violent dictator Isengar Gaukrogers until 1992, when he was overthrown. The nation has been a presidential republic since then, and has had 7 presidents, who may serve up to 3 terms.
Politics and government
The nation is a Presidental Republic, where Preisdents can serve, if elected again, up to 3 two-year terms. The nation has had one president who has done this, and one president elected in 2019 who is serving his second term, Folcard Brownlock.
Early government
The nation was a monarchy, ruled by King Caradas Underhill I, under an absolute monarchy. Underhill was a fairly democratic leader, but was overthrown in 1952 by Isengar Gaukrogers, who outlawed criticism of the government and took 90% of the country's tourism income, it's number 1 source of income, for himself and built himself a replica of Buckingham Palace. His goal was to finally gain recognition from a macronation by going communist, hoping to get relations with the Soviet Union. He was overthrown by democratic leaders in 1992.
Presidential Powers
The President has the ability to pass laws (as long as they do not violate the constitution), declare war, declare diplomatic support to a consenting nation, and do everything else expressed by the Saunan constitution. The President acts as head of government.
Parliament
Parliament acts as the legislature of the nation, which helps get into the specifics of laws being passed and tries criminals, and sentences them.
Foreign relations
The nation, as mentioned earlier, has no macronational allies, but maintains embassies and military alliances with the Horizon Islands and Panera.
Mutual recognition
Military
Sauna Guastriagua has a small military force of 100 personnel. There is a naval component, an air wing, and a ground force. The military has fought in the country's outer islands since the unrest of communist revolutionaries who took control of them. The forces fight alongside Paneran Royal Army forces and Horizonese forces in the islands.
Geography and climate
The nation has typical Central American climate, similar to that of Nicaragua and Southern Mexico.
Economy
The nation was extremely rich before being taken over by communism. After communism took over, the poverty rate shot up to 86%. After the dictator was overthrown, poverty gradually decreased, and is now at 14% in 2020, which was different from 30% in 2010. Since the nation is flooded with tourism mainly from the USA and Europe, the currency is made up of USD and Euros.
