Quailia, officially the Republic of Quailia, is a micronation located in North America and Antarctica.

Etymology

The name 'Quailia' originates from Quail Creek, a small creek located in what is now Qualia's Capital District.

History

Quailia was originally formed due to the efforts of siblings Benedict and Brigid Baltz, who had both taken an interest in micronationalism. Both siblings undertook substantial research on micronations before making the decision to form one of their own. Quailia was officially founded on September 11, 2012, a day that is now commemorated as a national holiday in contemporary Quailia. Benedict Baltz became Quailia's first Chancellor, whilst Brigid Baltz became Empress. The Empire's first citizens were the immediate family of the two siblings, though the later acquisition of the provinces of Lionsgate, Wunderbar Ort and Market Snodsbury exponentially increased the number of Quailian citizens.

Prior to the acquisition of these provinces, there was a small war, which as of yet is the only one in which Quailian forces have been deployed. A neighbouring micronation, of which the name is forgotten, declared war on Quailia, and at the same time attacked a Quailian border patrol. Over the course of six minutes, the Quailian military gained the upper hand against their adversaries, and the war was brought to a swift conclusion. The ruler of the enemy micronation abdicated, and Benedict Baltz, who was next in line of secession, due to the enemy ruler being his own brother, assumed the throne. Peace has prevailed since then, though the other micronation has reached such a state of inactivity that can it can reasonably be assumed to be defunct.

Soon thereafter, there was a profound scandal involving the kidnapping of the Empress' favourite stuffed animal, Swirly. After long and drawn out judicial proceedings, the only instance of such in all of Quailian history, the kidnapper was convicted and the kidnapped was returned to its lawful owner. Around this time, Empress Brigid changed her name to Empress Eleanore I, on the sole pretext of wanting to be a "cool empress."

Quailia saw further territorial expansion soon after this crisis, with the annexation of Solacia as a province. What's more, a revision to the Constitution was approved by the Assembly in February 2014.

The next event worthy of note occurred on 22 October 2014, when Fingland officially became a province of Quailia. This greatly increased Quailia's population, with Fingland having a population of seven. But it also posed a problem to the usual system of governance for the Quailian provinces. The landowner would be the one making all the decisions, with the title of Baron(ess). In the case of Fingland, the landowner didn't want to be troubled with it and actually revoked his title of Baron. Instead, Fingland elected a governor. The first governor wasn't much interested in Quailia either, so after only about a month of holding the position, she lost it in the next election to Colonel Christopher Woods, who assumed the responsibilities of the Governorship immediately. Among Colonel Woods' other responsibilities were Secretary of Defence, Official Finglandic correspondent for the Quailian Post, Finglandic Judge, Commander of the Fingland Terratorial Defence Unit, and Representative for Fingland in the Assembly.

In February 2015, Chancellor Baltz and Colonel Woods founded the Equestrian Order of Saint Thomas, a chivalric order for Catholic micronationalists. The first to join was King Connor of Mallanor, followed by King Paolo Emilio of Trebia, King George of Columba Pictorum, and King Oscar of Ruthenia.

After the government fell into inactivity in 2017, a republican revolution led by Benedict Baltz successfully took hold of the government and established the Republic of Quailia on October 16, 2021.

History of Fingland and Sylvatria

The idea for Fingland first occurred to the Woods family on late August 10, 2014, due to a Skype chat with Benedict Baltz. Because it was already late, plans for Fingland were put off for the next day. On August 11, things began swimmingly. The original plans were to have Fingland (though it wasn't called anything, then) declare independence when all was ready, and shortly afterwards ally with Quailia. So the first job was to find a name for the new micronation. Among the dozens proposed, the only one remembered is Empire of Oak Mansion (this is probably a good thing since most of the names proposed were totally abhorrent). After the population voted on which was their favourite, Fingland was finally settled on, despite Christopher Woods being put off about the rejection of Oak Mansion. It was just then that the War of Finglandic Independence took place. This war did not involve Quailia's military, because Fingland was at the moment an independent nation. It was longer than the Six Minute War, the battle lasting nearly twenty minutes and the tension lasting for days after. But as the Fingland supporters outnumbered the USA supporters 2-1, there was never any question as to who would win. The citizens then tried to design a flag for Fingland, but it was never finished. Unfortunately, it is impossible to rediscover the exact colouring of Fingland's original flag. Fingland's present flag was designed months later. Before the day was over, it was decided that Fingland would, instead of being independent, become a province of Quailia. This choice has proved to be profitable for both parties.

Later, Fingland was succeeded by the Province (now Canton) of Sylvatria.

Geography

Quailia's border with the United States of America.

Quailia's North American portion, which includes Capital District, is enclaved by the United States.

Capital District contains many Quailian places of interest, including the Capitol Building, which serves as seat for the Assembly; Quailia Square, which serves as the country's main outdoor gathering place; gardens; the 6-Minute War Memorial; the National Library; and the Quailian Currency Museum.

Quailia has five cantons: Lionsgate, Wunderbar Ort, Solacia, Sylvatria, and Schneiderland.

Quailia has one non-territorial commune, Harambanistan, centered in the Dallas-ForthWorth metroplex.

Quailia also has one overseas territory, Penguinia, which is located in coastal East Antarctica, near Wilhelm II Land.

Former provinces include Market Snodsbury and New Virginia.

Government

Quailia is a unitary parliamentary republic. The collective head of state is called the Council of State, the parliament is called the National Assembly, and the government is called the Chancery, which is headed by the Chancellor.

Economy

Quailia's chief export is hay from Lionsgate. Quailia is committed to free trade and imposes no duties or tariffs. Quailia describes itself as a "tax haven", and the national treasury accepts donations to offset the lack of taxes. Some donors receive the Order of Prosperity from the Chancellor for their donations.

Religion

The Sylvatrian people are all Byzantine Catholic, and while in communion with the Roman Catholic Church, have different traditions.

Culture

The quail, Quailia's national bird.

Quailia's culture is highly influenced by the Catholic faith of the vast majority of the citizens. Major Christian feasts such as Easter and Christmas are treated as holidays, with the height of the celebration for most Quailians being going to mass.

Other Quailian holidays are purely civil. Among these are Quailia Day (September 11), Flag Day (when Quailia's present flag was accepted), Republic Day (October 16), and Quailian Thanksgiving. The last is the Friday after American Thanksgiving. There were two reasons for shifting it, one being that there are always so many leftovers that the next day is nearly the same, food-wise, at least, and finally all Quailians give thanks that they stay home and are not caught up in the rush of Black Friday shoppers.

The national food of Quailia is pork tenderloin with pomegranate sauce. The national bird, is, of course, the quail, though they are not native to any part of Quailia's claims.

Sylvatria's culture is worth mentioning to point out these dissimilarities with the rest of Quailia. Sylvatria's culture is also heavily influenced by the Celts, in particular the Gaels of Scotland. Two of Sylvatria's inhabitants speak Scottish Gaelic with some certainty.
