The Kingdom of Aspen, more commonly known as Aspen, is an unrecognized territorial entity that claims to be a sovereign state, more commonly referred to as a micronation, in southeast Virginia. The Kingdom of Aspen declared independence from the Commonwealth of Virginia on 27 November 2018[a], drafting its first constitution the next day.
Aspen is composed of a number of regional authorities, colloquially known as provinces, that have nominal self governance. These regional authorities are located primarily in mainland North America, however, there are exceptions such as the Welsh Regional Authority which is located in Great Britain.
The culture of the Kingdom of Aspen is very diverse, with many cultural and political influences from the United Kingdom, the United States, and Germany. Aspen is officially secular, although there was previously a state church, it had very little influence on politics and government until it was abolished in early 2020.

The name Aspen originates from the name Aspendale, the name for a town created on a minecraft server by King James and his brother.
The Kingdom of Aspen was founded on 27 November 2018 by current King, James II, as the Aspen Empire. Before this Aspen was the name of a nation created in a minecraft server by James II and his brother.
Aspen was established in June of 2016 as the town of Aspendale by reigning monarch James II and his brother as a town on a minecraft towny server. This era, known as the Towny era, was characterized by semi-simulationist philosophy as opposed to the Secessionist philosophy present in Aspen today.
Under the towny era, the government functioned very differently, the monarch was the absolute ruler of Aspensale and there was no formal written constitution, much of this government is lost to time as records of Aspen were not kept pre-foundation.
Due to the simulationist nature of the towny era and the general pre-foundation period, the government of Aspen does not recognize 2016 as the official foundation year.
The First Empire and Collapse
The First Empire was partially inspired by Cai O’Gorman, a friend of the reigning monarch, who had advertised his micronation on a discord server. This started what was known as the transitional period. The transitional period was characterized by the introduction of Aspen to Microwiki and the micronational community as a whole.
The First Aspen Empire was established on 27 November 2018 by reigning monarch James II. A charter was officially drafted the next day which outlined the fundamental principles of the Aspen Government and the strict adherence to democracy and other liberal ideology. The First Nations to adopt full diplomacy with Aspen were Pazistan and Misberia.
Throughout the early days of the Aspen Empire, many of the citizens were people that had joined from the towny server, as well as some personal friends of the reigning monarch. In early December, the second constitution was approved, this document was heavily inspired by the Imperial German Constitution and allocated a number of powers to the monarch.
The second constitution lasted until February when the Aspen-Misberian Empire was established by Treaty. Prior to its creation, Aspen and Misberia had become very close allies, and it was by mutual agreement that the two nations should join together. This created a Diarchy with the King of Misberia and the Aspen Emperor as diarchs, in theory both diarchs were equal in power and both nations had heavy autonomy, but in practice the Aspen government attempted to force dominance over the Misberian government. The dissatisfaction with the attempted dominance over government affairs by the Aspen Empire, the Kingdom of Mibseria declared independence.
After the dissolution of Aspen-Misberia, dissatisfaction with how the situation was handled led to many viewing the monarchy and political corruption as responsible and created the Aspen Republic. The Republic was originally supported by the monarch who had agreed that the will of the people should be respected, however, upon abdication, the president of the republic assumed near-dictatorial powers over the government which led to the Aspen Civil War. The monarchists were eventually successful against the republicans which led to the creation of a crowned republic.
Although peace was achieved after the civil war, the post-war population never recovered and slowly the territories of the Empire were consolidated until they became defunct and Aspen became “An Empire without a state, and a people without a nation.” this, and a number of other factors, led to the dissolution of the First Empire on 25 June 2019.
After the collapse, the monarch created a number of micronations, usually lasting for just over a month before they too collapsed, most notably is Appalachia which, although initially successful, became politically corrupt and was transferred to Thomas Bainbridge as King of Appalachia.
Establishment of the Kingdom and Renaissance
The Second Aspen Empire was established on 9 June 2020 at the urging of a number of friends, this second Empire returned stability to Aspen and the population began to grow. Although slowly, the population slowly grew to its pre-dissolution level.
On 7 October 2020 the government enacted the October Reforms, a set of reforms that restructured the Aspen Empire into a new Kingdom of Aspen. This created a number of new institutions, the National Assembly was created upon the merger of the House of Commons and House of Lords, the cabinet was reformed into the Council of Ministers.
