The President of Ashaonia is the head of state in the Ashaonian Republic. The president also sits as head of the executive branch of government.

Election

Qualifications

To be eligible for office candidates must be a minimum of 16 years old, a citizen of the republic and have secured the nomination from at least one party in the Assembly of the Republic.

Election Process

Presidential elections are conducted by the assembly of the republic. Typically 2 candidates are nominated to the assembly of the republic, one each from the largest parties. Then parliament votes on the candidates. Whoever achieves the majority of votes is elected president. However, if a tie is reached another round of voting may be held in parliament.

Role

The president's role is largely ceremonial, due to the fact that Ashaonia is a parliamentary republic. However they do play an active role in national politics and have some powers over legislation.

The president's greatest powers are their ability to appoint the prime minister and the absolute power to withhold assent to Bills passed by Parliament meaning it cannot become law and this ability cannot be overridden by parliament. The president also has the discretionary power to dissolve parliament, typically on the advice of the council of state.
