The Order's mission was to defend the island from enemy galleys, to participate in humanitarian efforts and to care for the sick.

Today, this centuries-old tradition is still maintained in France, particularly in Provence. The Great Master of the Order is a nobleman of the Duchy of Bardo.

Organisation

The order is divided into servant brothers and knights: servant brothers must choose a field of specialisation (hospitaler, navy, army, justice or priesthood) while knights are obliged to take the quality of "hospitaler" but must take a second one. The Grand Master of the order can confer the dignity of bailiff to a knight who has particularly distinguished himself.

Admission

To be admitted to the category of Brother Servant, one must be a practising Catholic and have no previous convictions. To be admitted to the category of Knight of Grace, one must have been a Brother Servant in a hospitalfor one month, and have completed four sea caravans. This dignity confers personal nobility.Knights of Justice must fulfil the same conditions as for Knight of Grace, as well as providing documents attesting to their hereditary nobility.

Decoration

The medal for the Servant Brothers is worn on the chest and is navy blue. The Knight's Cross is that of the Order and is worn in saltire. The Knights of Justice must have their cross surmounted by a heraldic crown. The flag of the order is a blue cross on a white background.

Recognition

However, the Gregorian Order (or Equestrian Order of St Gregory the Great) has no international or Vatican recognition, and its status as a Sovereign State is not recognised.
