McMurdo City is the largest proposed city in the Federated States of Antarctica, with a target population of 400,000. It is located in Victoria Land on an ice-free island in Terra Nova Bay, approximately 200 miles north of its namesake McMurdo Sound.

Geography

McMurdo City occupies an island in Terra Nova Bay and an adjacent peninsula. Geologically, the features are part of nearby Mount Melbourne, a dormant volcano. Administratively, the city covers three of Victoria Land's five boroughs: Victoria, Ross, and Melbourne (named for the volcano). Nearby Hampton Borough is where the city's suburbs are to be located. McMurdo City is an important air, and, and sea gateway to Antarctica. The waters surrounding the city are ice-free during the summer months.

Climate

McMurdo City enjoys a cold climate year-round, though due to the influence of the Ross Sea, it is spared the severe cold of its sister city (and Victoria Land capital), Darwin. Precipitation almost always falls as snow and is frequent throughout the year.
