The Lord Chief Justice of Bastara is the head of the Supreme Court of Bastara and most senior judge in the judiciary of the Kingdom of Bastara. The office was established by the Bastaran constitution on 9 June 2023. The office is appointed by the Monarch.
History
The role of Lord Chief Justice is the oldest judicial office in Bastara. It was established on 9 June 2023 by the Constitution of Bastara.
Powers and Duties
Along with their general responsibilities as a member of the Supreme Court, the chief justice has several unique duties to fulfill.
Impeachment Trials
The lord chief justice may preside over impeachment trials of members of either house of parliament if the house they belong to expels them if they have been expelled based on accusations of a crime.
Seniority
Many of the supreme court's procedures and inner workings are governed by the rules of protocol based on the seniority of the justices. The lord chief justice always ranks first in the order of precedence — regardless of the length of the officeholder's service (even if shorter than that of one or more associate justices).
Coronation
The lord chief justice traditionally attends the coronations of new monarchs. Alongside the Chief Rabbi the lord chief justice helps administer oaths of office during the coronation service.
If the lord chief justice was incapacitated for a coronation, the chief rabbi can either complete the role on their own or choose to be aided by the next senior most Supreme Court justice.
Other Duties
Additional duties of the lord chief justice include:
- Head of the Judiciary
- Appoints Judges to Secret Courts
Appointment
The Lord Chief Justice, officially, is appointed by the Monarch. Appointments are based on the nomination from or confirmed by the Parliament of Bastara.
Officially the officeholder serves at the monarch's pleasure, but in practice they serve until they resign, retire or are impeached by parliament.
