The Leader of the House of Commons, sometimes known as the Commons Leader, is a minister of the crown in the Government of Fatrea whose main role is organising government business in the House of Commons. The officeholder is always a member of or an attendee to the cabinet.
As the government usually holds a majority in the House of Commons, majority of time in the House of Commons is given to government business. The leader of the house is responsible for organising this government business and providing a platform for non-government business to be put before the House of Commons.
The office is currently vacant.
History
The role of Leader of the House of Commons is as old as the House of Commons. The office was established on 15 February 2024, alongside the government and House of Commons. As a minister of the crown, the office has some constitutional roots in Chapter V of the constitution. The role was established to give the government a clear platform to be able to manage government business in parliament.
Responsibilities
The current responsibilities of the Leader of the House of Commons includes:
- Planning and Supervising the Government's Legislative Programme
- Manage Business of the House of Commons with the Speaker of the House
- Facilitate Motions and Debate in the House
- Representing the Government in the House
- Representing the House in Government
Appointment
The commons leader is appointed by the monarch, usually on the nomination of the prime minister. While the officeholder can theoretically be appointed from either house of parliament, as they manage government business in the House of Commons the officeholder is always a member of the House of Commons.
