Kalinawan (Cebuano: Teritoryo sa Kalinawan) is a territory of Nueva Bago, Kingdom of Arlandica. It comprises 2 reefs including a floating structure, considered as an island, located in Pakiputan Strait, 8 kilometers east of Santo Niño City.
Etymology
The word "Kalinawan" actually means "Clarity" in Filipino, referring to the waters that surrounds the reefs.
History
The reefs of Kalinawan were discovered by Jerold I through Google Earth and physical observation in search of new land claims. Jerold I claimed to be the first person to discover these marine features, as there were no labels or names for the area and they could not be spotted on official maps, especially those published by the Philippine Government. Eventually, Kalinawan became part of Arlandica on October 12, 2020, directly controlled by the Mainland.
Another observation conducted later revealed a floating steel structure within its territorial waters, which was named by the Arlandican Government as "Nevi Isle."
On July 29, 2023, Kalinawan was integrated into the jurisdiction of Nueva Bago from the Mainland.
Geography and biodiversity
It comprises Kalinawan Reef and the adjacent Valentina Reef, both of which are low-tide elevation reefs situated near Samal Island. It includes Nevi Isle, a floating steel structure. This area is located in Pakiputan strait between the main island of Mindanao and Samal Island. It has corals and several fish species that inhabits Kalinawan. The area is designated as a protected sanctuary aiming to preserve marine life. Foreign vessels are allowed to cross the area, especially Cargo ships.
