James I, Baron of Pelican Island KBF (1946–bef. 2016) was the only son of Bruce “the Fierce”, and succeeded him as the 2nd Lord of Pelican Island upon the latter’s death in December 1991. Upon his accession as Lord of Pelican Island, James sought to expand his title, declaring his territory the Barony of Pelican Island. As the Baron of Pelican Island, James I continued his father’s policy of using the small island as a base for extended offshore fishing expeditions. In 1995, together with his nephew Eric and a small group of friends, he established a seasonal camp on the north side of the island, naming it Port Whitney. Port Whitney developed into a 3 season hub of activity for the north-central coast of the Gulf of Mexico, drawing visitors from the neighboring United States. With strong hurricanes, erosion, and flooding, a permanent population was never established. Citing his failing health and inability to make the journey to Pelican Island, James I abdicated in favor of his Nephew Eric I on January 6, 1998.
