The Green Party of Hjemland is an environmentalist political party in Hjemland. The party was formed on 22 April 2020 – Earth Day – by former Liberal Party member and Advocate General, Sarah Dunn.

Since October 2020, it has served as the junior partner in the Liberal–Green coalition government.

History

Dunn had long been a proponent of a strong environmental focus for Hjemland. After failing to persuade successive Cabinets into pursuing strong environmental policies, she decided that an independent, green political party would be the most effective way to generate awareness and support. While serving as a government minister (Advocate General), she announced the formation of the Green Party on Earth Day 2020, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.

This made the Green Party the second party to split from the Liberal Party in 2020 though, unlike the other party to split, the Social Democratic Alliance, the Green Party continued to support the Liberal minority government of Prime Minister David Smith.

At the October 2020 general election, the Green Party finished third, winning 2 seats. After negotiations, it agreed to enter into a coalition government with the Liberal Party with party leader Dunn serving as Deputy Prime Minister.

Leadership

The Green Party considers itself a direct democracy with policymaking by majority vote of the membership and the co-leaders are bound to these decisions. The leadership is collective with co-leaders elected at the party's annual conference or whenever there is a vacancy. As the co-leaders are elected together, a vacancy for one co-leader is considered a vacancy for both co-leaders. If there are no candidates, incumbent co-leaders are automatically re-elected. Elections take place by instant-runoff voting method.
