The National Flag of Strathcona, often referred to simply as the Strathconian flag, consists of the Cross of Saint George superimposed on the Cross of Burgundy upon a white field. The flag was designed by Dustin Carlson, the founder and current Governor-General of Strathcona.

The Strathconian flag was adopted as a national flag by the Parliament of Strathcona on 1 June 2024, with official proportions of 1:2.

History

Strathcona was originally founded as the Dominion of Vancouver Island in 2019. Until mid-2024, the dominion used the flag of Vancouver Island as its national flag. This flag was designed by Michael Halleran in 1988 and its design consisted of a Blue Ensign with the badge of the 19th century Colony of Vancouver Island on a white disc on the fly half. Following the Act of Union with the British San Juan Islands and foundation of the modern Strathconian state in 2024, this design was relinquished and replaced by a new national flag designed by Dustin Carlson.

Symbolism

The use of the Cross of Saint George and the Cross of Burgundy symbolizes the exploration and settlement of Vancouver Island by the Royal Navy and Spanish Armada in the late 18th century and honours the friendly negotiations between George Vancouver and Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra over boundry disputes at Nootka Sound in 1792. The national colours of red and white are also the national colours of Canada and acknowledge the shared history between the two neighboring countries.

Use of the flag

The national flag is used to represent Strathcona and its citizens both at home and abroad. Within the country, the flag can be flown by any private individual, organization, or government agency on any day of their choice. The Strathconian Army is the guardian of the national flag and as such, unlike the Strathconian Navy or Air Force, does not have a separate ensign or colours. As is the case with Canada, the Union Jack also has official status as a second national flag as the "Royal Union Flag." For the civil and government ensigns, a Red Ensign and Blue Ensign are used, respectively.

The Royal Standard is only flown in the event of a visit from the King, and may also be displayed in his immediate presence.[a] The Governor-General of Strathcona uses a personal flag consisting of a royal blue background with a Royal Crest in the center, and the words "Strathcona" in black letters on a gold scroll below the Crest. A similar design is used by the governor-general's of most Commonwealth realms.

Half-mast

The correct way to fly the flag at half-mast is two-thirds between the bottom and top of the flagstaff, with at least the width of the flag between the top of the flag and the top of the pole, on command of the sovereign. Situations where the flag is required to be flown at half-mast include:

  • Upon the announcement of the death of the Sovereign
  • The day of the funeral of a member of the Royal Family
  • The funeral of a foreign head of state
  • The funeral of any citizen or government official of the Dominion of Strathcona

The flag can also be flown at half-mast for other reasons, at the discretion of the governor-general
