The rank was established on 28 March 2024.
Insignia
The rank insignia of a field marshal consists of two crossed batons surrounded by yellow leaves below a Tudor-style crown. The cap badge of a field marshal is also sightly different to the one used by other army generals. Field marshals are also authorised to carry batons on formal occasions.
Benefits
All field marshals, like admirals of the fleet and marshals of the air force, remain officers for life. However, they only receive half-pay if they are not currently holding a posting or are retired.
Appointment
Field marshals are all appointed by the monarch. Appointees usually receive the rank upon retirement or on receiving high military office such as chief of the defence staff or chief of the general staff. Appointees usually receive their rank for their long or dedicated service in the army.
Members of the royal family and nobles usually are elevated to the rank after a shorter period of service or receive the rank honorarily for services to the state or the monarch.
