A space nation (shortening of space micronation and synonymous with extraterrestrial micronation) is a micronation which claims, or is planning to claim, a portion of space—often portions of space itself, satellites, asteroids or planets. Most secessionist space nations plan to raise enough money to colonise a planet or asteroid, whilst others wish to launch satellites into orbit wherein citizens may reside. Simulationist space nations are generally more jocular, whilst others may claim portions of space largely as a protest against colonialism, space exploration or as a means of making money by selling titles or areas of a planet which they claim to own. The validity of space nations within micropatriology is disputed, though most see it as an unrealistic and unachievable goal for most micronations.
