Eveland (Estonian: Evemaa), officially Eveland Republic (Estonian: Evemaa Vabariik), sometimes also called Evelandia is a self proclaimed nation, which can be counted as a micronation, in Pirita, Estonia . The nation is run by the leaders and only members Argo and Evelin, who fill the roles of postmaster and post judge, president and chief justice respectively. [1]
The nation is generally run under the Strawman theory, which states, that an individual has two personas, one of flesh and blood and the other a separate legal personality (i.e., the "strawman") and that one's legal responsibilities belong to the strawman rather than the physical individual[2]. Thus the nation could be seen as a protest nation created to evade taxes. Argo and Evelin also subscribe to a multitude of other conspiracy theories, such as that Estonia was created as a business agreement to get the Tsarist Russian assets out of Soviet Russia, that humans originate from Mars, that Vatican rules the whole world, as each nation is allegedly a registered company under the control of Vatican; that vaccines are harmful, etc.[1]
The country was most probably established sometime in 2014[Note 1], but certainly existed already in the year 2015[2]. Eveland claims, that the area of influence of it's postal service is 12 nautical miles, making the total area of claimed influence about 1548.3 km², although the actual territory on which Eveland is located is only 606 m².[1]
Etymology
The name Eveland originates from the name Evelin. Argo has also stated, that it has connections to the words eve, as in Chirstmas Eve, defining it as the wait for something new. He also connects the name to Eve from the Old Testament, adding, that "If you know the story of Adam and Eve, then as you can tell, Adam was not the first. Eve was still the first.".[3]
Geography
Argo and Evelin used to own a house in Pirita, Tallinn, which they declared to be the territory of Eveland. However, as of 2015, the house had been sold at an auction, due to them not paying their loans to the bank.[2]
Politics and government
The nation is run by the Evelandian postal service, with Argo in its head. The role of Evelin as the president is, when needed, to change or reject decisions passed by Argo.[1]
Foreign relations
Eveland has allegedly sent a letter declaring independence to the UN.[2] However, as of 2023, the UN still hasn't acknowledged the sovereignty or existance of Eveland.
Eveland claims, that since it declared independance, Estonia has started putting fences around its military parades, as to not cause provocation towards Eveland.[1] No Estonian document or release supports that claim.
Economy
Argo claims, that as Eveland is not registered as a company, it cannot do business. He goes on to claim, that this is what makes Eveland a "real" country compared to sovereign nations. When asked in an interview why they do not find other similar "real" nations to do business with, Argo responded, stating, that freedom is more important than cooperation.[1]
Although not directly connected to the nation, Evelin and Argo hold lectures about their theories of the world, with one lecture costing 50€ or 2 ounces of silver.[2]
