The Republic of Vevčani is a micronation in North Macedonia.
History
In 1987 the inhabitants came into conflict with the Yugoslav authorities, who wanted to divert water from local sources to Struga. To mobilize the entire population, the inhabitants had even proclaimed a Republic of Vevčani.
After the fall of communism, the fictitious republic survived because it attracted tourists, who already arrived in large numbers to attend the local carnival, one of the largest village festivals in the Balkans.
