The Republic of Pantanal, more commonly known as Pantanal, is a micronation in South America, sharing borders with Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay.
Independent since 1829, after a long war with Brazil, Pantanal is one of the most recent countries of the continent. It is, since 1910, a federal presidential republic, after the overthrown of the military government led by General Mário Valeixo
Etymology
Pantanal comes from the word "Pântano", which means Swamp, which name was given because of its localization being on the Pantanal biome
History
Pre-colonial era
It is estimated that the first human beings occupied the area where the Pantanal is today about 60 thousand years ago, in that region settled mainly the Guarani-Kaiowá and Guató, ethnic groups that until today make up a significant part of the Pantanal population.
Before the arrival of Europeans on the continent, the borders were defined based on wars between the tribes themselves, the Lower Pantanal was the area that most concentrated different peoples, which contributed to the development of the Pantanal culture as one of the most diversified in the world.
Colonial era
The Europeans arrived in the Pantanal in 1524, when the Portuguese Aleixo Garcia reached the Paraguay River after a boat across the Miranda River, there was an abundance of precious metals, which interested the Portuguese crown.
Province of Brazil
With the proclamation of independence from Brazil in 1822, the Pantanal remained part of the territory of Mato Grosso until 1825, when the Province of Maracajú was created, which included the entire Pantanal territory shaped until the present day. The province received several immigrants from countries such as the newly proclaimed Bolivia, Paraguay, and Chile, brought by the Brazilian crown as a stimulus to immigration throughout the country.
War of independence
The Pantaneiran War of Independence began in 1827, a direct armed conflict between Brazil and Maracajú. The president of the province, José Francisco de Oliveira, would have recruited soldiers to fight when the territory of Maracajú was still part of Mato Grosso, the reasons being the lack of resources and the supposed abandonment of the region by the imperial government, Nogueira would still spread false information that the crown planned to hand over the territory to Bolivia, to support this, he used Cisplatina as an example, despite the incorrect statements, this ended up moving the population of Maracaju, who decided to join the rebel army to fight the war.
There were no winners in this war, having ended through a peace treaty in 1829, the Sovereign Treaty, which finally determined the sovereignty of the Pantanal, with the signing of the treaty, Brazil was the first country to recognize the newly proclaimed nation
