The Coalitionary States of New Saratoga, more commonly known as New Saratoga or simply The Coalition, is a micronation located on the west coast of North America.

The Coalitionary States of New Saratoga claim to be the first nation with a "coalitionary" government, however it is dissimilar to a traditional coalition, functioning as a representative democracy.

The fledgling nation is currently an observer of the Grand Unified Micronational, and foreign policy indicates a desire to forge stronger ties with fellow nations.

History

While The Coalition was officially founded on the 7th of February 2023, there are many different interpretations of its history before then, with some claiming that Coalitionary ideals and customs date back thousands of years. There is no traditional evidence for any of these claims however.

Founding Fathers

The Founding Fathers are characterized as the all-wise and powerful group of men who are credited by many for the creation of the coalitionary style governing system.

Cicero, who may or may not be related to Marcus Tullius Cicero, is a semi mythological figure that many credit for the creation of The Coalition along with the Founding Fathers, though there is no clear consensus over the capacity of his involvement. In a 2023 poll of all state delegates, 100% of them believed in Cicero's existence and contribution to the Coalition. Although there are disputes on his association with the Founding Fathers as some believe that he was referred to as the "Founding Son" while others believe that there is not enough evidence to determine if this was a real nickname or not. Most statements from the Coalitionary Government only vaguely thank Cicero.

Formal independence and modern history

The Coalitionary States of New Saratoga formally declared independence on the 7th of February, 2023. State delegates Kster, FURMARK CUBA, TSOTFF, Juck, and KIE-ster were present when the declaration was made.

On the 29th of May 2023, the Coalitionary States of New Saratoga was accepted as an observer by the Grand Unified Micronational.

The one day dictatorship

On the 8th of February, 2023, the Coalitionary States of New Saratoga temporarily became a dictatorship ruled by FURMARK CUBA after the passage of The FURMARK CUBA Investments & Appreciation Act. FURMARK CUBA used this power to repeal the 5th and 6th clause of the Epic Ammendments, as well as the act that made him dictator, returning the nation to democracy.

Surprise Party scandal

On the 8th of May, 2023, state delegates FURMARK CUBA and TSOTFF made a joint statement of admission towards the creation of a secret political party, the Surprise Party. As mentioned in its offical document, the main goal of the partnership was to gain control over the Coalitionary Caucus. Reaction to the scandal was mild.

The Clyde controversy

On the 15th of May, 2023, state delegate TSOTFF and his state TLOTFF illegally seceded from and declared war on The Coalitionary States of New Saratoga. His main reason for doing so was the passage of The Clydeification Declaration. This law forced citizens of The Coalition to acknowledge the existence of the cyan-colored hedgehog from Sonic Underground that was believed to originally be one of the main characters of the show, but ultimately cut completely right before release. This passing was preceded by multiple threats from TSOTFF of leaving The Coalition. Unknown to him however, The Clydeification Declaration had not passed, failing to reach above the 65% majority needed for it to become law. Ironically, the secession of TLOTFF allowed The Clydeification Declaration to pass. The Coalitionary States of New Saratoga does not recognize the breakaway state.

Politics and government

The founding document and supreme law of the nation is The Papers of Coalition. The Coalitionary government is styled similarly to other representative democracies, with some variations. The primary decision making body of The Coalition is the Coalitionary Caucus, which is composed of all the state delegates of The Coalition. Each member state of The Coalition must elect a state delegate to represent them in the Coalitionary Caucus. A state delegate can be chosen via any means by the state, meaning democracy cannot be guaranteed by The Coalition at lower levels of the government. The value of a state delegates vote is tied to the population of the state being represented.

The Coalition Minister is the premier head of state of the Coalitionary States of New Saratoga. Elected via a Coalitionary Caucus vote, the primary power of the Coalition Minister is the ability to sway any votes made by the Coalitioary Caucus by 10%.

Coalition Senator

The Coalitionary Senator is the subordinate head of state of the Coalitionary States of New Saratoga. Any runner-up candidates in a Coalition Minister election will be made Coalition Senator. The Coalition Senators ability is similar to Coalition Ministers, with the power to enforce a smaller 5% sway on any vote made by the Coalitionary Caucus.

Coalition Treasurer

Unlike Coalition Minister and Coalition Senator, who are voted for via the Coalitionary Caucus, the Coalition Treasurer is appointed personally by the Coalition Minister. The Coalition Treasurer's responsibility is to regulate the economy of The Coalition, and has the power to veto any amendments to The Papers of Coalition that involve economics.

Geography and climate

The Saratogan government has not commisioned any studies into the climate patterns or terrain of the nation.

Economy

When The Coalition first declared independence, an economy did not exist. Money was printed, but was not regulated or supported by the government in any offical capacity and was only accepted as payment on good faith. Despite many economic-aid laws including the “How Great!” Tax Laws and The Quarter Penny Hay-Penny Economic Regulations and Establishment of the Sand Standard 2 being passed, the country further sank into economic difficulty with the passage of the The Barotrauma Subsidie Accord Compromise, which among other things guaranteed a copy of the 2019 videogame Barotrauma for every citizen of the Coalition. The "Barotrauma Debt" that resulted from this was a massive burden on the finances of the nation, with conservative estimates reporting a debt of $720 USD, which amounted to ∞% of the nations GDP. Recent efforts to improve the economic situation include the passage of the The Saratogan Currency Reform Act, which removed the "Barotrauma debt" and created a new currency for The Coalition, the Coalitionary asker.

There have been many proposals for solutions to the nations debt crisis, including the Money Burning Program (an anti-inflation initiative), and Graveyard Economics, a three step policy.

Graveyard Economics Policy

1. Nationalize graveyards.
2. Set limitations on the amount of food in the nation.
3. Profit.

In layman's terms, food go down, graveyard go up. This policy has yet to be implemented by the Coalitionary government.
