The Democratic Republic of Howe (officially abbreviated to the DRoH and sometimes called the Howetanese Republic), known from October 2014 to late 2015 as The Empire of the Democratic Republic of Howe (officially abbreviated to TEOTDROH), was a model country in south-west England from 2014 to 2016, considered one of the Acteriendian model countries. The Empire was first created on 16 October 2014, existing for nearly two years before the DRoH became inactive to the point of non-existence in around August 2016. Part of the Devon Union and (at times loosely) associated with Acteriendia, the DRoH outlasted a number of its smaller contemporaries and along with the Kingdom of Skovaji is now recognised as having been a major contributor to the culture of Glastieve. During its existence, the DRoH was considered by itself and by other Acteriendians to be a "micronation", and officially claimed to be a sovereign state.

The Empire of the Democratic Republic of Howe was formed on 16 October 2016 in response to the creation of the Nation of Bedroom (NoB), later the Kingdom of Skovaji, two days earlier. In its early days, the one-person Empire developed alongside the two-man Nation of Bedroom, and the two countries became the centre of the Exeter United Nations, an organisation that grew to include several smaller model countries and be considered part of Early Acteriendia. The NoB started to become a rival to the Empire in the primitive cultural group that had grown up around the EUM, and foreign affairs dominated the 'politics' of the model country. Later in October, the country introduced and started minting the Token, a currency, and engaged in a "currency war" with the NoB where both tried to increase the value of their currencies. The EUM and the majority of its member states folded on 1 December 2014. The Empire of the Democratic Republic of Howe overtook the Nation of Bedroom in influence in late 2014 and early 2015, as the latter recovered from internal political turmoil indirectly caused by the end of the EUN and saw its two-person leadership system descend into a power struggle.

The country's initial claims included land which now makes up part of the province of Redvers, and the head of state was an unelected Prime Minister, who fulfilled the role of an emperor. The country's constitution, unlike its parallel, the Nation of Bedroom, was codified in a small booklet detailing the laws of the nation.

From July 2015, however, the Empire was overtaken by the Republic of Skovaji (the new name of the Nation of Bedroom), which had joined the MicroWiki Community and was now a de facto one-person state led by Campbell. To make the model country more serious, Howe in July renamed the state to the Democratic Republic of Howe (DRoH), changed the flag, introduced a "national emblem" equivalent to a coat of arms, and some model-sized "buildings" were also "closed", including Beddon Airport. Despite these changes, Howe and his model country were the subject of attacks by the Weekly Wesley (Skovaji's newspaper) for being "non-serious", with criticisms including the DRoH's continued recognition of animals as citizens and even as members of the government and its strict laws about what names could be used to describe the country. These tensions came to a head at some point in 2015, when Skovaji changed their official stance on the DRoH to "recognise autonomy but not full sovereignty", in violation of a treaty the two had signed in 2014.

TBD, 2015-16

After the empire was abolished the flag was redesigned and the emperor became the Prime Minister. In late 2015 a constitution was drafted and was finalized on 30 January 2016.

As relations between Skovaji and the DRoH turned sour, Howe focussed on developing the country internally. In late 2015, a new constitution was drafted, being adopted on 30 January 2016. He also abandoned the Token as a currency in early 2016, switching to officially recognising the Pound Sterling, and the national demonym was changed from "Howeian" to "Howetanese". At some point in late 2015, Skovaji (strictly, the Skovajan Anarcho-Communist State) fought the Beale War with the DRoH, which ended in a victory for the Democratic Republic of Howe and triggered another internal crisis in Skovaji that saw Campbell give up some powers to the Lord Wesley. Howe formed the Howetanese Military in the aftermath of the conflict. As a result of the country's victory in the Beale War and the changes Howe implemented, the DRoH briefly overtook Skovaji in perceived status. In January 2016, Howe rejected Campbell's Wesley Union proposals.

Following the March 2016 reforms in Skovaji, however, the DRoH started to become less active as Howe became a member of the High Council and as its foreign affairs-orientated politics suffered from Skovaji's brief period of increased influence over Acteriendian politics. According to Skovajan historical records, the Democratic Republic of Howe was inactive but existant until around August 2016, when it petered out and Howe started to consider it "defunct". Unlike in Skovaji, the DRoH's government was never officially abolished and its land was never formally ceded to the United Kingdom, meaning that technically the Republic of Howe was the longest-lived of the Acteriendian model countries. Its current formal existence is merely a tenuous legal shadow, although in Spring 2018 Howe did briefly considered reviving the model country in response to political strife in Glastieve.

The Howetanese Military was also formed around this time to provide defence for the nation in the event of a second Beale War.

TBD, 2016

In early 2016 the denonym "Howeian" was changed to "Howetanese" and the name of the country was allowed two more shortened forms along with DRoH, the other acceptable names were: Howetanese Republic and Republic of Howe.

Proposed revival

On 23 March 2018, Michael Howe claimed to have "reactivated" the long-defunct Democratic Republic of Howe, claiming on its MicroWiki article that it "was being reformed". However, on 23 May 2018, Howe stated that he had abandoned this revival effort; when Campbell mentioned the claim made on the outdated MicroWiki article, Howe noted that it "needed to be removed" (he was not aware that Campbell had already started to rewrite the article treating the DRoH as a former entity and part of the history of Acteriendia). When asked directly in June, Howe confirmed that he no longer had any plans to revive the DRoH.
