Powers and Duties
Along with their general responsibilities as a member of the Supreme Court, the chief justice has several unique duties to fulfill.
Impeachment Trials
The chief justice is granted the ability to preside over the national assembly, instead of the assembly speaker, and can preside over presidential impeachment trials.
Seniority
Many of the court's procedures of the supreme court are governed by the rules of protocol based on the seniority of the justices. The chief justice always ranks first in the order of precedence—regardless of the length of the officeholder's service. This elevated status has enabled successive chief justices to define and refine both the court's culture and its judicial priorities.
The chief justice sets the agenda for the weekly meetings and has the power to accept or veto cases that the supreme court will tackle.
Presidential Oaths
The chief justice also has the duty of administering presidential and vice presidential oaths of office during inaugurations after presidential elections.
Appointment
The chief justice is nominated by the National Assembly but confirmed and appointed by the president on the nomination of the assembly.
Eligibility
To be eligible for office, candidates typically have to already be a justice on the supreme court for a minimum of 8 months. They are required to receive a nomination from the national assembly and then be appointed by the president.
