Crown dependencies are self-governing possessions of The Crown. They are distinct from the overseas territories, being independently administered jurisdictions, none forms part of the Kingdom. Although the Crown dependencies are possessions of the Crown, and are not sovereign nations in their own right, the power to pass legislation affecting the islands ultimately rests with their own respective legislative assemblies, with the assent of the Crown.

In each Crown dependency, the monarch is represented by a Lieutenant Governor, but this post is largely ceremonial. The Lieutenant Governors of each Crown dependency have been recommended to the Crown by a panel in each respective Crown dependency.
