The Askanan Republic, commonly known as Askana, is a self declared sovereign nation sometimes referred to as a Micronation. The nation was first established as a presidential republic but was later converted to a semi-presidential republic with the abolition of the Vice Presidency and the establishment of the office of Prime Minister.

History

Askana was established on 2 January 2023 as a presidential republic. However, on 3 January 2023 the nation became a semi-presidential republic.

Government and Politics

Askana has been a semi-presidential republic since 3 January 2023.

The President has an executive role. Parliament is the primary legislative body. The Government is headed by the Prime Minister and includes Ministers. The judicial system is overseen by the supreme court.

Presidency

The Head of State of Askana is the President of the Republic. They are elected by the Electoral College. Presidential powers include the appointment of the Prime Minister and the other members of the Government (where the President takes into account the results of legislative elections); dismissing the Prime Minister; dissolving Parliament (typically to call early elections); vetoing legislation; and declaring a state of war or siege. The President has also supervisory and reserve powers an is ex officio the Commander-in-Chief of any established national armed forces.

The President is advised on issues of importance by the Council of State which is composed of the prime minister, leader of the opposition, one member chosen by parliament and one civilian or ex-president appointed by the incumbent president.

Government

The Government is headed by the presidentially appointed Prime Minister, who is aided by a Deputy Prime Minister and the cabinet. The cabinet is staffed by the PM & DPM as well as ministerial-level secretaries who chair specific departments. The cabinet is chaired by the prime minister, though at their request the President can take over and chair the cabinet on the PM's behalf.

The Government is both the organ of sovereignty that conducts the general politics of the country and the superior body of the public administration. The government holds a range of executive and legislative powers.

Parliament

Parliament is the primary bicameral legislature of the republic. It was initially established as a congress but was reformed when the national political system became a semi-presidential republic.

Parliament consists of a senate as the upper house and a House of Delegates as the lower house. The lower house is elected by proportional representation whereas the senate is mostly appointed, but former presidents are guaranteed a seat after they leave office.

The government typically sits in the House of Delegates, but can draw ministers from the senate. Governments can also be dismissed by parliament through votes of no confidence and with confirmation from the president.

Parliament can be dissolved and elections can be called at any time by the president, however this is typically done on the advice of the Council of State.

Culture

Askanan culture can be seen as a mix of Welsh and Portuguese culture being heavily influenced by both.

Religion

Religion plays an important role in national culture. The republic is a Christian nation and a national church is maintained providing a place of worship for the nation.
