The 2024 Chai Coup d'etat (Thai: การรัฐประหารในประเทศไชย ค.ศ.2024) was a successful coup d'état in the Imperial State of Chai by the National Peacekeeping and Equality Council (NPEC) , Led by Moth Sankhom. The coup occurred as a result of a political crisis in Chai, By Moth who holds the position of Chief of Defense Forces and the Deputy Prime Minister Declare to seize power from Prime Minister Boss. The coup had immediate results. The National Council for Peace and Equality was founded by Moth was announced a coup at 6:00 p.m. according to GMT+7 time zone

Background

The government led by Prime Minister Boss Albert Marcosse faced a challenging problem with the number of state personnel, which the government tried to solve but failed. It also caused divisions within the government. The parliament was in chaos many times. The opposition and the government fought fiercely in the parliament. The Prime Minister could not control the situation and the government could not perform its duties stably. Moth Sankhom, who was then the Deputy Prime Minister and a major in the army, began to feel fed up with the current situation and thought of solving the problem by himself. Until August 3, 2024, he was promoted from the emperor to general. Because of the good deeds he had done, he took advantage of this opportunity to establish a coup group At first, he called it the National Military Council and surrounded the parliament and the Prime Minister's mansion on August 4, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. At first, he started negotiations with the government and Prime Minister Boss. But as time passed, the tension between the two sides escalated and the negotiations were unsuccessful, so he ordered the arrest of Prime Minister Boss at 4:00 p.m. and changed the name of the coup group to the National Peacekeeping and Equality Council. And announced a coup at 18:00 on August 4, 2024, with Moth as acting prime minister, and established the Council for Restoring State Security, with him as chairman, to restore security and stability to the country.

Consequences

The NPEC's first act was to address the nation. General Moth Sankhom a said in a press conference after the coup that "I have to do this for the benefit of my fellow citizens and the peace of the nation"

The reaction among the population was mixed. Some viewed the coup as a necessary intervention, a chance to reset a government that had lost its way. Others were skeptical, fearing that the military would not relinquish power once it had been seized.

In the days that followed, the NPEC took steps to maintain order and stability. All media outlets were temporarily placed under government control to prevent the spread of misinformation and to ensure that the council's messages of peace and unity were heard. Strict curfews were enforced in major cities to prevent unrest, but the military presence was noticeably restrained, with soldiers instructed to avoid confrontations and to assist civilians whenever possible.

Many people have criticized and questioned the coup. General Moth Sankhom responded by saying " If I don't do it, who will?" and announced that he would not give any more interviews on this matter.

As weeks passed, the NPEC began to fulfill its promises. Boss's officials were removed from their positions, and new economic policies were introduced to address inequality. The council also initiated a series of public consultations, allowing citizens to voice their concerns and participate in the creation of a new constitution.

Despite the initial uncertainty, the country slowly began to heal. The absence of violence during the coup had a profound impact, fostering a sense of hope that this change, though unconventional, might truly lead to a better future.
