Achem (/ˈətʃɛm/ Sabian: Achêm Arrij) was a Crown Dependency of the Empire of Austenasia between December 2014 and October 2015. Situated in South America and an enclave of the Venezuelan municipality of Libertador, Achem was comprised of an open area of land. Achem was established on 3 December 2014 after being offered to the Empire by Tarik Kârjasary, who was appointed Governing Commissioner of the Crown Dependency upon its foundation. Kârjasary moved away from the area in late August 2015, and the Crown Dependency was dissolved on 29 October later that year after a period of non-government.

The Crown Dependency bordered Sabia and Verona to the southwest.

Although under Austenasian sovereignty, Achem was a Crown Dependency, and so was neither taxed nor had representation in Parliament. The Emperor held absolute power over the Crown Dependency, exercised on his behalf by the Governing Commissioner, with Austenasian legislation not applying to Achem unless it explicitly referred to it.

History

The territory that became Achem entered the territorial claims of the Lycene Freehold in September 2013, when it became part of the Province of Nymoceru. The Lyceni knew this area as the Smoke Gardens, and it was divided into three sections: Ei'Oruuq, Araixanion and Axeem, the easternmost of the sections. In Sabian, the latter was interpreted as achêm ("jewel"). Achem, alongside the other sections of the Smoke Gardens, eventually became a popular topic in Sabian poetry.

In February 2014 Lycem lost its independence when it became an integral part of Sabia and Verona. Sabia and Verona intended to claim the Smoke Gardens under the name of Suxourdogashy (Eastern Realms), but there was a mistake when measuring the territory and most of the section of Achêm was not claimed alongside the rest of the Smoke Gardens. This error was not discovered until November 2014. By then amending the constitution and managing the Senate to approve a law expanding the Sabioveronese territory seemed like too much work of a patch of land to the east, so the territory was offered to Austenasia by the Duke of Evra Tarik Kârjasary, and it became a Crown Dependency in December 2014.
