The United Federation (TUF) is a fledgling online micronation inspired by the early history of the United States. It was founded on March 23, 2023, although its origins date back to a region of the same name in the game NationStates.

History

NationStates Years

Although its earliest years are poorly documented, the United Federation began its life as a region in the popular government simulation browser game NationStates. When exactly it was founded isn't known, but per the Wayback Machine, its existence can be attested to at least as early as 2009. Future micronational founder Nicholas O'Neill arrived in the region in June 2011. At that time, under the leadership of President Neisse, the United Federation was among the largest regions in the game, with over 500 nations. The region had a vibrant political scene during this period, and at a time when most successful regions were governed by monarchies, the United Federation was a rare example of a stable and functional republic.

Despite strong growth and activity throughout the preceding year, the United Federation declined over the course of 2012 as Neisse and other prominent regional figures departed to pursue other projects. Over the next two years, a rapid succession of governments attempted to revitalize the region, but these efforts proved unsuccessful. By the end of 2014, the United Federation had effectively been abandoned. Upon ceasing to exist, Nicholas O'Neill, refounded the region, securing it from potential raiders. Several discussions were had amongst former citizens in the following years, but no significant attempts at restoration were ultimately made.

Micronation Founded

In early 2023, O'Neill, after his experiences as a citizen of Caudonia and Gwladcoeden, made it known he wished to found a new micronation. After exploring several ideas, as well as a staging a failed attempt at claiming the throne of the Kingdom of New Cambria, he came to the decision to resurrect the United Federation. Working with his former colleagues Andrew West and Archibald Sinclair, O'Neill drafted a constitution, which was ratified on March 23, 2023. O'Neill, West, and Sinclair simultaneously formed a Committee of Public Safety to oversee the nation's Discord server, as well to serve as a provisional government until the constitution becomes operative. By March 28, 2023, Jacob Anthony became a member of the Committee as well.

Government and politics

The United Federation operates within the framework of a unitary presidential republic, as laid out in its constitution. In accordance with the principle of separation of powers, its government is divided into three distinct branches: the executive branch, the legislative branch, and the judicial branch.

Despite having only recently been established, several political parties have emerged in the United Federation.
