"Trans" vs "Transgender"

The majority of the admin team (minus me, because I know people won't like it) wants "Transgender" instead of "Trans", citing that "trans" is just Latin for "across" and that it could probably be interpreted as "trans-anything", like "transracial". Which, these are fair points. We need to have titles use verbiage that works for the uninitiated (normies).
I know the most-inclusive term is "Trans*", which is why I went for "Trans" (which is a shorthand of that); the asterisk would likely be confusing for most readers, and I figured omitting the asterisk is comparable to omitting the plus in "LGBT+", which the wiki does for the sake of convenience, just like Wikipedia.
Speaking of which, Wikipedia, for whatever that's worth, consistently uses "Transgender", just as the admin team is proposing.
What does the community think about this matter?

@Swena Well, doing a Google search for "trans" rights did not yield a single article that was not about the trans* community. There were some articles however that referred to "transgender" rights. I think it's okay but the arguments for the change are laughable in my opinion. No one is going to think it's Latin for "across". Come on, be serious just a little bit.
