The Speaker of the Chamber is a political position in the State of Hamsterland and serves as the presiding officer of the Chamber of Hamsters, the lower house of Hamsterlands Congress. The Speaker position is mostly honorary due to a decision made by the first and current Justice of Hamsterland. Therefore the Speaker position does not grant the holder any special powers to influence the work of the Chamber and the holder of the gavel can still vote as usual. The Justice also decided that the position, as it did not matter who held it, would rotate each year between members of the Chamber.
Duties and responsibilities
The Speaker of the Chamber is officialy appointed by the Chief Hamster to preside over the Chamber. This gives them to job to keep order in the Chamber and make sure it's work goes smoothly. Additional duties include calling votes when bills are proposed, announcing the results of said votes and dissolving Congress at the end of each year on the Chief Hamsters behalf to call elections. When in office the Speaker according to the Constitution holds the gavel, which reffers to both the physical gavel used by the Speaker during sessions and the Office of the Speaker.
List of Speakers
There has as of 2023 been one exception to the yearly rotation. That being the first Speaker Lennart Wahlberg who was appointed to serve during 2018. When the year came to a close however he was reappointed by Ludde on request of the leaders of all the parties in Congress to serve a second term during 2019. On January 15 2020 he was replaced and since the office has as decided by the Justice rotated yearly.
