The Social Liberal Party (Romance: Partito Social Liberal) is a social liberal, egalitarian political party in the Romance Republic.

Founded on International Women's Day, 8 March 2019, the party contested the June 2019 election and crossed the 5% threshold to win 1 seat in Parliament.

On 8 June 2020, the party unanimously voted to dissolve and merge with the Democratic Centre to form the Liberal Democratic Party.

History

Formation

The party was founded by Clara Esteves Guifré, a former deputy and spokesperson for justice for the Party of Social Democrats. Esteves, who identifies as gender queer (and uses the pronoun "they"), left the party after losing their seat at the February 2019 election.

Electoral alliances

From November 2019, the party sought to participate in a broad-left "Progressive Alliance" that was then being suggested among the smaller left-wing parties in Parliament. In December 2019, the PSL and Democratic Centre stood a joint-candidate in the 2019 presidential election. A more informal electoral pact followed and lasted throughout the June 2019 and January 2020 parliamentary elections.

Dissolution & merger

On 8 June 2020, after several weeks of secret negotiations, the party voted unanimously in favour of merging with Democratic Centre to form the centrist Liberal Democratic Party.

Political ideology

The party considers itself not to confirm to the left-right spectrum though observers describe the party as being left-wing.

The party was founded to "raise awareness of and push for" feminism, egalitarianism and, especially, LGBTIQ rights within both the Romance Republic and the wider micronational community.
