The Royal Vryland Defence Force (Afrikaans: Koninklike Vryland Weermag) is the national military force of the Kingdom of Vryland. Originally founded as a solely military force, it later took on civilian policing role after the merger with the Royal Vryland Police to form the Royal Vryland Gendarmery.
The armed forces of Vryland are currently maintained under royal prerogative with the king as commander-in-chief, who formally commissions all officers. There are currently two branches of the Royal Vryland Defence Force, the Defence Force proper and the Gendarmery.
Vryland Independent Company
The Vryland Independent Company is the main fighting arm of the military. The company is intended to be mobile in rough terrain and to operate independently for several days, meaning it is lightly equipped.
Royal Vryland Gendarmery
The Royal Vryland Gendarmery can trace its lineage back to the Royal Vryland Police, which acted as the civilian police force of the nation until its disbandment. The Gendarmery provides civilian policing but is able to assist the military when required and, although fairly independent, is still under the ultimate control of the military.
The king is currently the interim head of the Gendarmery.
