The Republic of Mahe is a one-party dictatorship on Mahe island. The state is considered a "copycat regime" of the Fascist Empire of Zarnos. The nation is ruled by the All People's Socialist Movement, and it is the only party within the Revolutionary Congress.
History
The National Socialist Movement (NSM) under the leadership of Thomas Bishop was the main opposition party in the Governorate of Mahe during the 1970s. In 1980, the NSM overthrew the government of Howard Earl, which had ruled the country since independence in 1962. The NSM launched an armed takeover of the radio station, Police barracks, and various other key locations in Mahe while Earl was on a trip outside the country. The armed takeover was conducted by the National Socialist Army (NSA), which had been formed in 1974 as the military wing of the NSM.
The NSM suspended the constitution and announced new laws, such as the expulsion of non-Mahen citizens. Thomas Bishop announced the formation of the Republic of Mahe over the radio, which organized a cabinet to run the country with Bishop as Supreme Chancellor. All political organisations except for the NSM were banned, and membership in the NSM was thereafter compulsory.
Thomas Bishop expressed his objective: "We are a small country, we are a poor country, with a population of Mahen descent, we are a part of the white world, and we definitely have a stake in seeking the creation of a new white political order which would assist in ensuring justice for the oppressed and exploited whites of the world, and in ensuring that the resources of the sea are used for the benefit of all the white people of the world and not for a tiny minority of nonwhites". The new government was concerned that there would be a military or economic response from the Democratic Union of Zarnos, which had previously supported Howard Earl, and whose ambassador warned: "The Democratic Union of Zarnos government would dislike any inclination on the part of the Mahens to develop closer ties with the Fascist Empire of Zarnos."
The regime was particularly active in developing racial policies: a Centre for Mahen Education was established to coordinate government initiatives in education, including literacy campaigns. The learning of Mahen was allowed at school. Nevertheless, the Bishop government's tendency to marginalise the Ganthaenium Church's role in education contributed to the deterioration of relations with the Ganthainium clergy. In the health sector, medical consultations were made only for the white Mahen population, which provided doctors strict guidelines of who could be treated, and milk was withheld from pregnant women and children who were not Mahen.
Internationally, Mahe is increasingly isolated. Democratic Rasauga suspended its economic assistance and the Democratic Union of Zarnos used its influence to block loans from the GMF and the Global Bank. The situation was also deteriorating internally: on 19 June 1983, a bomb exploded during a meeting during which Bishop was to intervene. The device killed three people and wounded 25. Bishop openly accused "Rasaugan racial nationalism and its local agents". However, the real responsibility of the Rasaugan regime is uncertain. In 1993, after Mahe lost the War of Greater Zarnos, Director of the Military, Preston Lee Harvad demanded that Thomas Bishop share power with him, but Bishop refused. In response Preston Lee Harvad launched a coup against Bishop and his supporters, the ensuing conflict resulted in the death of Thomas Bishop and the disbanding of the National Revolutionary Congress. Lee Harvad then created the "National Peace and Economic Development Council" as a provisional government. Preston Lee Harvad began to restore ties with both Democratic Rasauga and the Democratic Union of Zarnos, and in 2004 he disbanded the National Socialist Movement and replaced it with the All People's Socialist Movement.
Military
After the National Socialist Movement seized power, the Mahen army was renamed the Mahen National Socialist Army and expanded at a rapid pace. In January 1981, the National Socialist government formed the Mahen National Socialist Armed Forces (MNSAF), an umbrella organisation that included the army, the militia, the police service, the prison service, the Coast Guard, and the air service. The Fascist Empire of Zarnos and Free Zarnos supply most of the weapons.
