The Principality of the Northern Forests was established in 2020 as an independent Principality in the North lands of the United States near the Arctic Circle. The Current ruler is Princess Cedrus I of the Northern Forests (1975-Present) of the Princely House of Cedrus. The Principality has forewent the inferior republican government and the violence that ensues from them to create a place that is safe, free, and everyone respects authority and the law. It is a semi-self sufficient cooperative living community whose goal is to become completely self-sufficient from the United States and most modern conveniences. It is a serious attempt to create something better than what those who occupy its lands were forced to live under previously.

Etymology

The Principality of the Northern Forests is named after the Northern Arctic evergreen Forests. The lands are cold most of the year and seen many months of snow, ice and blistering cold winds in the winter. The Principality sits directly amongst the Northern Forests and is almost completely covered by trees.

History

The Principality of the Northern Forests is a permanent cooperative style social and political experiment. It was founded to have a safe place to live in a semi 14th century medieval manner using as little modern conveniences as possible. We grew tired of living around all the crime and violence that has festered in the modern inferior republican world so we decided to find someplace we could be relatively safe from violent, virtue lacking people who trollop about society looking for their next victim. The remote nature of the state of Alaska and the cold, long winters made it a perfect choice for the Principality.

We know from criminal justice research that when it is cold people refrain from being out in the cold unless they absolutely have to thus, a significant reduction in criminality occurs. The Principality is remote enough that it takes effort to get to the Principality's Borders and then even more effort to find the Northern Village on foot. The Principality's total landmass is currently small, but there are plans to increase the landmass of the Principality in the future by acquiring neighboring acreage. Acquiring more landmass will also give rise to an increased population that lives in the Northern Village permanently. Thus, the Principality is an independent autonomous semi-self sufficient cooperative 14th century style living community.

Geography

The Principality of the Northern Forests is surrounded by four major mountain chains. Each of them is a sizable mass of rock, glaciers and snow, stretching for kilometers. The Northern Range are the defining mountains of the region the Principality of the Northern Forests is situated in. These mountains are huge shield volcanoes mountains. Some of these mountains peak at 16,390 feet tall. The biggest river in the region is a fast, muddy river, moving along at around 7 miles an hour, and dropping a significant 12 feet every mile. It is fed by 13 major tributaries. At one time, the entire region was a large inland lake, blocked by ice dams. Around 10,000 years ago, the ice abruptly melted, and the lake emptied.

Climate

The Principality of the Northern Forests features a dry-summer subarctic climate (Köppen climate classification: Dsc) The Principality is located in the continental climate zone, with long, cold winters, and relatively warm summers. The mean temperature in January is -10 °F (-23 °C); in July, 56 °F (13 °C). However, temperatures can reach -50 °F (-46 °C) in winter and 80 °F (27 °C) in summer. Snowfall averages 39 inches (1 m), with total precipitation of 9 inches (23 cm) per year. On clear nights during the Principalities winter you can spot the Northern Lights.

Vegatation

The style of greenhouse used by inhabitants of the Principality of the Northern Forests.
This is what a 12 by 20 foot front facing cabin looks of. It is big enough for 1-2 people. You can acquire these fully finished for about 10-12 thousand dollars.

Vegetation in the Principality of the Northern Forests has low diversity, as only hardy species can survive the long winters and make use of the short summers. The trees are almsot all conifers, as very few broadleaved trees are able to survive the very low temperatures in winter. This type of forest is also known as taiga, a term which is sometimes applied to the climate found therein as well. Even though the diversity may be low, numbers are high, and the taiga (boreal) forest is the largest forest biome on the planet.The process by which plants become acclimated to cold temperatures is called hardening.

Agricultural potential is generally poor, due to the natural infertility of soils and the prevalence of swamps and lakes left by departing ice sheets, and short growing seasons prohibit all but the hardiest of crops. Beets, Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Chard, Dill, and Fava bean are common crops in the subartic areas. The principality of the Northern Forests uses greenhouses to grow more temperature sensitive crops for most of the year.

Housing

You must provide your own housing. Your housing cannot be any larger than 12'x20' and they cannot have any type of modern exterior. This size house can generally house 1-2 people comfortably so if you have children it is advisable to build something else for them unless they are small. It cannot be attached to the main house, but can be next to it. There will be no indoor toilets and everyone must have their own outhouse within 40 feet of their houses. You are allowed, within reason, to put up other outbuildings you may need to fully immerse yourself in the medieval living environment. Nothing post 14th century will be allowed outside the houses. You must be committed to farming and bring a skill set to the Principality. You will get a small section of land to do this and must give 5% of the yield to the Princely family annually. In a feudal system everyone has a purpose, a job, and a skill they must bring to the proverbial table. Greenhouses are great for extended growing seasons and more temperature sensitive vegetables.

Outhouses

Principality law stipulates that outhouses have to be at least 15"s in diameter and 10 feet deep, on a level ground, well ventilated, and easily accessible to your house. It cannot be any further than 40 feet from any corner of your house depending on your location.

Utilities

If you desire you can build a small solar and wind electricity source. There is no grid to connect the principality to. A basic solar/wind hybrid system cost about $3,000 USD not including batteries or installation. It is recommended to use propane stove and refrigerators which use portable propane tanks, but you can do the inside of your home however you desire. You need to figure out what your power usage is and how to supply it to your house. Any generators have to be "quiet" models and can only be used for emergencies (e.g. keeping a fridge or freezer running). Propane stoves and fridges are relatively inexpensive to maintain after the initial purchase which puts a significant reduction on actual electrical draws from your system. The Northern Forests has a lot of cloudy, rainy, misty and snow days every year so you will get more from wind than solar most of the year. Once your reliance on the modern world wanes eventually you won't even need electricity anymore.

Government

The term Principality is sometimes used generically for any small Monarchy, especially for small sovereign states ruled by a Monarch of a lesser rank than a Queen. The Government of the Principality is currently a semi-absolute Monarchy with an advisery House of Nobility. The Principality has a peerage with both hereditary and life peerages. The Principality also uses a Monarchical rank structure which includes two Royal Orders of Knighthood ruled by Princess Cedrus I of the Northern Forests. The Principality does not sell Titles of Nobility or Knighthoods.

Those who have chosen to live in the Northern Forest lands submit themselves to the Government and laws of the Principality of the Northern Forest and take an Oath of Allegiance. This does not renounce their claims to United States citizenship, it just subjects them to the laws of the Principality of the Northern Forest lands and any decrees issued by the Princess of the Northern Forest Lands or her Government. Be advised that if the Principality is ever officially recognized that the United States allows its citizens to have "dual citizenship" so nobody has to pick between one or the other unless they are already dual citizens of some other country.

The Heir apparent of the Principality is known as the Prince of Amabilis and represents the Princess and the Monarchy officially everywhere he goes. For expository simplicity; then, the Principality is an semi-absolute Monarchy with a written Constitution where the Princess Cedrus I of the Northern Forests|Princess of the Northern Forests is head of state and head of Government and rules on the advice of the Prime Regent and the House of Nobility. The House of Nobility drafts legislation on advice of the Manorial Lords & Ladies and are selected at random to be Judges in the Princess's Courts. The society is set up in a type of feudal hierarchy. The Principality does not use any type of elected office for any position in Government of the Principality of the Northern Forests as it should be.

Political Sub Divisions

The Principality of the Northern Forests is divided amongst six Duchies three of which are outposts with the smallest being the Duchy of Topaz. Grand Duchess Isabella of Deodara has administrative oversight of the Duchies except the Duchy of Pineland which is managed directly by the Duke of Pineland. The Grand Duchy of Deodara is not included in this list. Each Duchy is further divided into various Shires, Baronies, and Manors. The current list of Duchies in the Principality are as follows:

  • Duchy of Topaz; a Principality Outpost in the Midwestern area of the United States
  • Duchy of Chalcedony; a Principality Outpost in the Southwestern area of the United States
  • Duchy of Pineland; a Principality Outpost in Scotland
  • Duchy of Larix; a Duchy in the Principality of the Northern Forests
  • Duchy of Thuja; a Duchy in the Principality of the Northern Forests
  • Duchy of Unakite; a Duchy in the Principality of the Northern Forests

The Principality of the Northern Forests only recognizes five levels of the Nobility, of which they may or may not have legal privileges. Some titles are mere courtesies and only carry with them incorporeal hereditament all of which are outlined in the Letters Patent. The title of Grand Duchess / Duke is actually a Royal Title for someone of the Princely Family:

  • Duchess/Duke
  • Countess/Count
  • Baroness/Baron
  • Manorial Ladies/Lords
  • Dame/Knight

Criminal Justice and the Courts

The judiciary is composed of three courts. Manorial Courts are the lowest Courts and hear mainly civil and minor criminal matters. The intermediate Court is called the Northern Appellate Court which hears appeals from the Manorial Courts. The Princess's Court oversees serious Criminal matters and hears appeals from the Northern Appellate Court. The Principality of the Northern Forests has a zero tolerance for any type of criminal activity. Even minor acts of criminality can result in banishment from the Principality and forfeiture of any monetary investment any subjects may have contributed to the Principality including seizing their house and personal property. It is made clear that any criminal acts, even minor ones, may result in severe sanctions, banishment and lifetime prohibition of ever returning to the Principality. Any person, or persons, who violates a law of the United States will be held by the Principality under common law arrest and remanded to law enforcement officials of the State of Alaska at the Principalities borders. The Princess of the Northern Forests is also a skilled Fugitive Recovery Agent and holds a Bachelor of Arts degrees in criminal justice amongst 4 other degrees as well.

The Principality currently has its own Criminal and Civil Code and the law enforcement matters are dealt with by the Princely Police Force as well as Royal Guards. The Penal Code is extensive and concise clearly stating what is a violate of any given statue.

Government Offices

The modern part of the Principality of the Northern Forests is managed outside the Primary Borders of the Principality. So our webpages, Wiki, Facebook, You tube and other social media, mailings, exams, tests, Certificates, Awards, etc. is managed in the Duchy of Topaz. Certificates signed by the Princess or Grand Duchess personally may take weeks or even months to reach a person.

Citizenship

The Principality of the Northern Forests does not just let anyone become a citizen like many other micronations do. You must fill out an application for citizenship and meet strict criteria. You must either be dedicated to living in the Principality full-time or advocate for the Principality in a significant manner by representing the Principality from where you currently reside. Eventually, in the very near future, the Principality will feature a fully functional 14th Century Village which will include a Blacksmith, Carpenter, various small 12x20 homes, and a small Farmer's Market at various time at our Borders with the state Highway in the summers. Highly desirable skills include, but are not limited to:

  • Sewing, dress making, weaving, loom work
  • Organic Farming;
  • Harvesting by hand (wheat)
  • Raising Farm Animals (chickens, Goats, Bovines, Horses)
  • Stone Masonry;
  • Wood Working;
  • Making furniture from wood and stone;
  • Basic Engineering;
  • Electrician Skills;
  • Blacksmiths;
  • Canning; pickling; and food preservation
  • Working with medieval tools

Eventually in the coming years there will be 14th century Medieval Faires and Markets open to the Public in the Summer that you can showcase and sell your handy work to.

Agreements and Waivers

The princely family has consulted with Attorneys to draft legally binding waivers and declarations for any person who comes to live in the Principality which will be enforceable under the law of the State of Alaska and the United States. The Principality is composed of private land and is in a relatively remote location far from hospitals, pharmacies and clinics. For example, one required legal agreement is a Hold Harmless Agreement. This is a legal agreement that states that one party will not hold another party liable for risk, such as physical risk or damage and even death. A Release of Liability (Waiver) is a legal document which prohibits one party from suing another in the event of an accident, injury or even death resulting from any activities in the Principality. So the Principality nor the Princely family can be held accountable if you end up dying from an accident whilst in the Principality and it prohibits any actionable lawsuits by your family as well. Another agreement is an immersion agreement explained below.

Immersion Agreement

It states that anyone who lives in the Principality agrees to not break the 14th-15th century immersion permanently. That means modern clothing, modern devices, audio systems loud enough to disrupt others will not be allowed outside a persons home. Modern clothing (such as boots or shoes) can be used so long as it resembles medieval attire from the time period subject to approval. A lot of medieval boots created today have modern rubber soles and this is perfectly okay. Children are to be held accountable by their respective guardian to abide by the same rules. Parents suffer vicarious liability for their children. This agreement applies to everywhere, all the time, and permanently unless you move away from the Principality. Clothing can be from the 13th to 15th centuries which gives plenty of time period choices.

Modern items are welcome in private areas only and outside the home withing reason. So it is best to leave your cellular phone in your house most of the time. Failing to adhere to this protocol could potentially be addressed by the Princess's Court and could lead to banishment for continued willful violations over a long period of time. The only exceptions are Solar and Wind Turbines that must exist outside the home and internet in the form of a satellite dish and/or propane tanks. This means all the tools you use outside your house have to have historical significance. Axes, saws, sheers, augers, hammers, sledge hammers, flails, Scythes and shovels must all be as close to 14th century tools as possible unless you have a legitimate reason for modern tools and written permission to temporarily violate the Immersion Agreement (i.e. permission to use a chainsaw to down a tree). This is important because it allows a group of like minded people to live out their days in a meaningful way how they want to (i.e. in the 14th century). This immersion agreement forces everyone to adhere to this protocol permanently. Thus, you should only come here if that is the type of life you desire to live.

The Princely Family has consulted with Attorneys to draft legally binding waivers and declarations for any person who comes to live in the Principality of the Northern Forests which will be enforceable under the law of the State of Alaska and the United States. The Principality is composed of private land and is in a relatively remote location far from hospitals, pharmacies and clinics. For example, one required legal agreement is a Hold Harmless Agreement. So the Principality nor the Princely Family can be held accountable if you end up dying from an accident whilst in the Principality and it prohibits any actionable lawsuits by your family as well. Another significant agreement is the Immersion Agreement. Please see Contracts and Waivers for more information.

Finances

Unfortunately, on a small scale nothing is perfect so those who decide to spend a great deal of money to come to the principality either need to have a decent amount of money in their bank account that will last them a few years or they need to have some type of Alternative income until they are completely self-sufficient in the future. Your alternate income needs to be used to to buy extra food, tools, clothing, do housing repairs, buy necessary prescriptions, own life insurance, health insurance and be successful in the Principality. This can be SSD, SSI, trust funds, retirement, pensions, settlements, renting out houses somewhere else or from a part-time job somewhere. It is recommended to have at least 6 months of long-term food storage per person. These long-term food storage last for 25-30 years so stock up, the more the better. This is a great way to make sure you get to eat healthy in the long cold winters. So, start saving money now so you will have a few thousand dollars to live off for a couple years. You can do this with just a few thousand USD. You can survive in the Principality until you become self-sufficient on around $3,679 a year and that includes a 1 year supply of long term food storage from Augason Farms for one person. Once you are self-sufficient and do not need modern amenities it will cost you $25 USD a month to live in the principality and that tax can be bartered for your time and services to others - which equates to 4 hours of your time a month to do productive things "for" the principality or other subjects. Part of living together in a cooperative environment is helping one another so this is the incentive to do just that.

Taxes

The Principality of the Northern Forest does have taxes. Every subject is required to pay $25 USD a month in taxes. Accumulating consecutive months of back taxes will be addressed by the Princess's Court. You can also barder for this tax and use your skills and services to improve the Principality in some way, but the funds go into the treasury to help maintain the trails, roads, wells, and land in the Principality. Every subject also pays a $250 USD establishment tax for coming to the Principality which also goes in the Princely Treasury.

Diplomatic Relations

The Principality does not recognize any illegitimate governments such as those which replaced Sovereign Monarchies; especially those in the last 125 years. Examples include, but are not limited to, France, Portugal, Brazil, Nepal, Croatia, Serbia and especially Albania since the referendum of 1997 was in favor of the Monarchy but the illegitimate Republic of Albania has not relinquished control. The Principality does not consider Non-Monarchical governments to be legitimate. There is no empirically valid evidence that electing leaders actually produces better leaders - none. Virtually all of human history has been ruled by Hereditary leadership (e.g. Chieftainships, Tribalism, Monarchies) in some way save the last 125 years. We believe anything outside of hereditary leadership is inferior with very few exceptions and have no desire to engage in any type of diplomatic relations with non-monarchies unless such interaction is beyond our control (i.e. being forced to deal with the state of Alaska and the U.S. government).

Criteria for Recognition

The Principality of the Northern Forests was founded along the lines of the declarative theory of statehood, meaning that if the state exists then it is a sovereign subject of international law. The Principality of the Northern Forests comprises of sub Arctic territory in the Northern Forests. The Principality follows the standard principles of the declarative theory of statehood:

  1. a defined territory
  2. a permanent population
  3. a government
  4. capacity to enter relations with other nations or states

The Principality of the Northern Forests rejects the idea of “sovereign citizens” and does not engage in relations with role-playing entities called “micronations” which are pretend countries that emulate nations/states but have no intention of being an international Sovereign State. We ask that “micronations” please refrain from contacting us unless your goal is the become a legitimate self-governing state whether its completely independent, autonomous or a Sub National system (e.g. Reservations in the U.S., Wales in the United Kingdom, or traditional Kingdoms in Africa). The Principality of the Northern Forests adheres to United States law even if we do not recognize the republican form of government (e.g. The Hawaiian Kingdom). For expository simplicity, We are a self-governing autonomous Principality that uses Monarchical and Feudal systems of governance in a cooperative style 14th century living community.

Correspondence

The Principality has engaged in correspondence with the following countries, organizations or entities:
