O Dear Norteria-Barland is the national anthem of Norteria-Barland, written and set to music in May 2024 by Jeffrey Su. It replaced "O Norteria" as the country's official anthem after only one month of the latter's adoption.
History
Background
From its formation in September 2022 until May 2024, Norteria-Barland did not have original music for its national anthem, using instead the tune from Haydn's "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser" paired with original English lyrics. This song was titled "Nortero-Barlandic Hymn" and was played during national events such as prime ministerial inaugurations and state meetings, becoming a symbol of national pride.
Despite the hymn's popularity, various attempts were made by Norterian composers to write an original song to replace it but to no success until 1 May 2024 with Su's "O Norteria". The new anthem was fast and march-like, quickly becoming popular among citizens. However, there was a general consensus that the song was more fitting as a military march rather than a formal anthem, leading to the creation of "O Dear Norteria-Barland" 3 weeks later. On 6 June 2024, it was performed for the first time at the inauguration of 7th prime minister Anshak Jain in Cape Jade.
Composition
It is similar in style to South Africa's former national anthem Die Stem van Suid-Afrika, having been set to the same key, tempo and form. Su was fond of that song at the time of composing, dubbing it the "most beautiful national anthem the world has ever seen" and later tried to emulate its style in O Dear Norteria-Barland.
The song is uplifting and lyrical in tone, praising the country and swearing to protect its freedoms. It has become widely popular among Nortero-Barlandic citizens and has been adapted into a concert band march.
