Geography
Most of Helluland lies north of the Arctic Circle, the nation has polar night in winter and midnight sun in summer. Helluland is made up of mostly uninhabited islands in the Arctic Circle, with some First Nation peoples being found throughout the region.
Climate
Helluland lies in the path of a generally northerly airflow all year round, so, like much of northeastern Canada and Greenland, it has an extremely cold climate. This brings very long, cold winters and foggy, cloudy summers, which have helped to add to the remoteness of the island. Spring thaw arrives much later than normal for a position straddling the Arctic Circle: around early June, in the south-east but around early- to mid-July on the north coast where glaciers run right down to sea level. Snow, even heavy snow, can occur at any time of the year, although it is least likely in July and early August. Average annual temperatures are around −9.5 °C (14.9 °F).
Culture
Helluland's culture is Hrafnarfjallian and can be seen as the pattern of human activity and symbolism associated with the culture of Hrafnarfjall and its people. It is a primarily North American culture, however, as its Heads of State are Norse Pagan, the culture has been heavily influenced by that of the Old Norse periods where practical. The Hrafnarfjallian culture is extremely varied, being influenced by all peoples bringing their various cultures to Hrafnarfjall and its Commonwealths.
Religion
Helluland's Heads of State are practicing Norse Pagans, and this has heavily influenced Hrafnarfjall and Helluland's development and design. Freedom of religion and acceptance of religious practice are guaranteed in Hrafnarfjall's Constitution. Therefore, while officially Hrafnarfjall and Helluland observe Norse Pagan blots as below, other holy days may be observed within Hrafnarfjall and Helluland and religious accommodation provided to observe all holy days of the practices observed by Hrafnarfjallian and Hellulandic citizens. No requirement to convert to any religion is permitted in Hrafnarfjall or Helluland.
Public Holidays
The Heads of State observe the below holidays:
- Yule - Approximately January 21 through January 24
- Sigurblot - Approximately of April 19 into April 20. First Night of Summer and a major holiday.
- Winter Nights - October 13 through October 17. The start of Winter.
- Alfablot - Night of November 12.
The basis for the blots are as follows: The Ynglinga Saga (chapter 8) and Heimskringla, the saga of Hakon the Good, section 15. Note that the Norse holidays are lunar based. While the heads of state follow the above holidays, this is not a full list of holidays observed within Hrafnarfjall due to the varying religious practices followed by its citizens. As of the 30th May 2019, the Foundation Day was added as a formal Public Holiday in the Kingdom of Hrafnarfjall. This is to celebrate the found of the Capital of Hrafnarfjall, and should be celebrated by all citizens.
