A leadership spill in the Progressive party, the party of government in the Parliament of Fishing Trail, was held on 4 May 2020 at 9:15 pm, followed by a ballot. Sergio announced his intention to seek the leadership at a press conference on 3 May.

At the leadership ballot, Ewing won by a vote of 3 to 1.

Background

On 30 May 2020 Ewing lead the Progressive Party to a minority government at the May 2020 Fishing General Election. The next day Sergio, the leader of the Center Party joined the Progressive Party which made the Progressive have a majority in the Parliament.

Voting system

According to the rules of the Progressive Party of Fishing Trail each member that represents an electorate get 3 votes, any senators get 2 votes, and the national member gets only 1 vote

All 2 members of the Progressive caucus from the House of Representatives eligible to vote, with 3 votes needed to win.

Result

Ewing overwhelmingly defeated Sergio in the leadership ballot, by 3 votes to 1. Sergio was elected Deputy Leader, He pledged to challenge in the future.

Following the vote, Ewing described the events leading up to the ballot as "Not what the people of Fishing Trail would expect after a general election" but said that the leadership issue was now "Finished".
