Intercoastal Republic of Kingsbridge

Kingsbridge, officially the Republic of Kingsbridge, was a self-proclaimed state, better known as a micronation, located in Southeast Virginia, USA. It was founded on September 1, 2021 as a successor to the nearby Republic of Cedar Lakes founded in 2019. As of 2022, the population was 31, down from 32 at the 2021 census, although 150 resided within the claimed borders. The country was dissolved in 2023 and was succeeded by the Bowers Democratic Republic.

The Republic was recognized or observed by two other micronations (United Saban States and the State of Faltree). On September 20, 2022, the neighboring Republic of Noasia issued its intentions to annex Kingsbridge, causing a withdrawal of recognition and tensions to rise between the two states. In August 2023, after an internal government crisis relating to position changes, Jennings officially declared the dissolution of Kingsbridge and relinquished all claims to the territory. On August 30, 2023, the final meeting of officials concluded and the Republic was reintegrated into the United States. On November 2, 2023, Jennings would establish the successor state, the Bowers Democratic Republic, and form a new government, replacing the previous cabinets. This nation would retain the same style of government.

History

Formation

On August 20, 2021, following a move of location and a referendum by the State Senate, the precursor to Kingsbridge, the Republic of Cedar Lakes, was dissolved. After settling down in his new location on September 1st, Zach Jennings, former President of Cedar Lakes, along with local Gracie Costner, drafted the Republic of Kingsbridge Independence Pact, and announced the establishment of the Republic of Kingsbridge, with Jennings as Republic Leader and Costner as Secondary Leader. A Senate was formed and subdivision borders were finalized.

2022 Kingsbridge Fire

In September 2022 at midnight, a fire broke out in an apartment complex in Kingsbridge County near the border of Great Bridge. The Chesapeake Fire Department was called to help extinguish the flames. The west wing of the building was boarded up by Kingsbridge officials after the fire was put out. One dog died in the fire, no casualties from citizens were reported. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Geography

The Republic of Kingsbridge is a landlocked enclave micronation surrounded by the U.S. Commonwealth of Virginia on all sides. It sits in the Southeast section of the state in the Hampton Roads region. The uninhabited territory of Alisabeth Island sits at the mouth of the Elizabeth River 10 miles from the mainland.

Administrative divisions

The Republic of Kingsbridge is divided into 10 administrative divisions: 6 counties, 2 districts which act as county-equivalents, and 2 uninhabited incorporated territories. All people residing within Kingsbridge borders are considered citizens and are therefore counted to that division's census, but registered citizens are the only individuals capable of holding any office.

Districts are special divisions which hold government buildings. They are treated as county-equivalents but are not part of any county.

Territories

Territories are fully integrated into the Republic but lack a population and capital, and are governed by the direct order of the Senate. Territories with a permanent population are capable of achieving countyhood.

Alisabeth Island Territory

This is the only division of Kingsbridge that does not border the mainland and the only island territory of Kingsbridge.

Unorganized Territory

This territory contains one church that is used as a gathering place as well as for other activities.
