Phonology

Note: all pronunciations are in International Phonetic Alphabet format

The Letter A

The most inconsistent aspect of Hestavian phonology is the letter A. At the beginning or middle of the word, it is pronounced "ei". At the end of a word, it is pronounced "ä". If a ring diacritic is placed on the letter A at the beginning or middle of a word, it is also pronounced "ä". The ring diacritic on the letter A is the only diacritic present in Hestavian. If the letter I is followed by the letter A, it forms the "ja" diphthong. The letter I also forms the same type of diphthong when preceding the letter O and E ("jo̞", "jɛ").

Grammar

Verbs

Hestavian has four verb tenses: past, present, future, and infinitive. The infinitive suffix is -e, the present suffix is -ås, the past suffix is -a, and the future suffix is -era. In the case of the negative, the suffix is replaced with "n't" regardless of the tense, so "Eskn't" could translate to "Isn't", "Wasn't", or "Won't be" depending on the context.

Hestavian does not have do-dependency like English does. For example, in English one would say "Did you make this?" whereas in Hestavian one would say "Fiksa vi sel?" (made you this?). Notice the lack of the verb "do".
