The Free Hundred of Babergh, more commonly known as Babergh, is de-facto sovereign state, more commonly referred to as a micronation located in Suffolk, England. It was founded in August 2020 in order to protest the planned name-change of the town council from its ancestral name to South Suffolk, much to the outcry of the residents.
Babergh functions as an Elective Monarchy, with the King/Queen being elected every 2 years. On top of this, the citizenry elect a parliament, known as the Folketing, of which the leader of the largest party becomes the First Lord/Lady. The King is a largely ceremonial role, but can pass laws, provided the are approved by the First Lord/Lady, or, failing that, the Folketing.
Babergh can be classed as being a Light Secessionist micronation, claiming independence but recognising its more light-hearted elements. That being said, much of the legislative process is kept in a serious manner, and civic cultural preservation of the Hundred's idiosyncrasies is kept as sacrosanct.

Etymology
Babergh is first officially listed in the Domesday Book as the Hundred of Baberga, in 1084, believed to mean "Mound of a man called Babba." This was most likely taken from Babergh Heath, an area surrounding Great and Little Waldingfield, and the ancestral meeting place of the Hundred.
Though being ruled by a King, the pretitle of "Free Hundred" was chosen in order to better reflect Babergh's anglo-saxon roots, with Hundred being the main subdivision of the UK until 1894. "Free" is used to indicate Babergh's independence, as well as the rights of liberty and free determination.
