The Deputy Prime Minister is the second highest ranking member of the Council of Ministers. The Prime Minister is head of government and, according to the Instrument of Government, gives the title of deputy to one of the members of the Council of Ministers.

The Deputy Prime Minister is often used as an honorary title given to the leader of a coalition party. In some cases there may be multiple deputies, but this happens rarely. The deputy prime minister has a number of specific powers granted by the Instrument of Government, this includes chairing meetings of the council of ministers when the prime minister is unavailable. In the case the prime minister is unable to perform his duties, the deputy prime minister may serve in his place.

Should a prime minister resign, die or be permanently unable to perform his duties, the deputy prime minister may serve as acting prime minister until a new prime minister is confirmed by the National Assembly

The current Deputy Chancellor is Otto Gillespie Birch. He was appointed to the position by the monarch on the 10 October 2020.
