Snowatia, officially the Republic of Snowatia, is a micronation within Ontario, Canada composed of forests and many smaller enclaves. It was founded on December 9th 2021 by Dexter Francis Gerald Wrigley, Aidan Suomi, and Sam Salz, with Wrigley now serving as its current and eternal leader. The original territory was composed of the schoolyard of their old middle school with some areas of forest nearby. It was created when Wrigley and Suomi left playing foursquare because another classmate, Riley Strawberry, was cheating. Using the snow around them they were able to dig a small hole into a snowbank and then started to make a wall when Sam Salz came over.
A Discord group chat was created on the same day where Wrigley suggested multiple names and created a couple flags. The names included in the vote were The United Federation of Walls, The Republic of The Allies, People's Republic of Allies, The Russians, The Republic of Doge, Siberian State, Doge Republic of Siberia, Doge Republic of EQ, Democratic People's Republic of the Siberian Wall, and The Republic of Snowatia. Snowatia won the vote with everyone agreeing on the name and the Greenland-Somalia flag mix was chosen as the flag.
Snowatia does not take it's statehood seriously and has no plan on becoming a recognized nation. It is more of a country made as a joke with Wrigley stating "Snowatia is a joke country made by some school kids. We made Snowatia so we could essentially be kings in our own little kingdom and just have something to do during recess".
Etymology
The name Snowatia took inspiration from the nation of Croatia due to Wrigley's Croatian heritage. This is somewhat joked about and has become a meme within Snowatia with it being prominently featured on old pieces of propaganda. Obviously the "snow" part in the name just means snow since the infrastructure was based around snow.
History
Snowatia was founded on December 9th 2021, with Dexter Francis Gerald Wrigley being declared the Supreme Leader, Aidan Suomi being declared the Vice President and Sam Salz being declared the Minister of Defence. The territory has changed drastically over time but originally began as a small section of the schoolyard where they would play during recess.
Oppression in foursquare
During that particular recess on December 19th 2021, Riley Strawberry was abusing his power in foursquare, a four player ball game popular among schoolchildren at the time. Wrigley and Suomi decided to stop playing foursquare because of Strawberry's abuse and left to play in a nearby snowbank. After a few minutes Sam Salz came over and they started to make a wall out of snow. After a few minutes, most of the class was at the wall with Strawberry joining them last. He asked to be promoted to a high ranking role which he was obviously denied. He threw the foursquare ball at the wall damaging a good portion of it in his fit of rage and said "It probably won't be there tomorrow".
Creation of Snowatia
Wrigley and Salz created a basic ranking system while they were on a walk. It detailed rank names as well as the symbol for them on the front and promotion and job requirements on the back. After school, Wrigley created a Discord group chat where they decided on names and flags. The name chosen was Snowatia, and the flag chosen was a Greenland-Somalia mix with an overlapping star on it. Despite doing most of the work, Wrigley never took complete control of the country, however, but instead saw Snowatia as a way for all children to play equally without someone telling them what to do. The citizens of Snowatia did not care though, and decided to elect Wrigley as their leader the same day. Salz was appointed to be the Secretary of Defense and Suomi was appointed to be 2nd in Command. Wrigley then wrote the "Secretary of Defense Hand Guide", a book with information on the ranking system, troop training and job requirements. The book was given to Salz on December 10th 2021 for him to train the other children to protect the wall.
First attacks on Snowatia
On December 13th 2021, the first attack against Snowatia was carried out by unknown children who destroyed the entire wall. Wrigley and Salz determined that the wall was destroyed on the same day since it hadn't frozen over yet and still had fresh snow. Wrigley decided they needed to grow their borders to find a safe place to build a settlement. They carried around a small paper Snowatian flag with a few popsicle sticks for a pole and used it to mark the best option to build a new wall. They couldn't find a safe place to build, so they returned to the destroyed wall and began building with whatever was left. They named this area "Mount Snowatia" because of the giant mountain of snow made by snowplows a few weeks before. This became the capital of the nation on the same day with colonial officials often referring to Mount Snowatia as "The heart of Snowatia". Mount Snowatia was claimed using the paper Snowatian flag. While the wall was being reconstructed, Brighton Thunder, another student, was planning an attack. He and a few friends got together to steal the flag with little success. They successfully stole it only twice with Snowatian soldiers getting it back every time. Unfortunately one attempt pulled off by an unknown group member was successful and they snapped the pole of the flag. Brighton Thunder was cleared of any suspicion as he was in Snowatian custody when the flag was stolen.
