Paxlume, officially the People's Republic of Paxlume, is a council-communist online micronation built on the principles of direct democracy, worker control, and social justice. Founded with the goal of establishing a classless society, Paxlume promotes equality, solidarity, and the collective ownership of resources. Its governance is decentralised, with the National Council and local councils playing a significant role in decision-making.
Though Paxlume exists primarily in the digital space, its values and organisational structure reflect a highly developed, real-world community.
Etymology
The name Paxlume is derived from two Latin words: Pax meaning “peace” and Lumen meaning “light”. Together, they symbolise the vision of a peaceful, enlightened society led by the principles of socialism and equality. The name reflects the Republic’s commitment to fostering peace, justice, and solidarity among its citizens.
History
The history of Paxlume reflects a gradual evolution from a concept rooted in capitalism to a socialist-communist society, undergoing multiple phases of governance before arriving at its current council-communist form.
State of Utopia
The origins of Paxlume trace back to an early concept known as the State of Utopia, envisioned as a capitalist nation. This idea emerged during a conversation with a friend, focusing on economic growth and individual success. However, over time, dissatisfaction with capitalist principles led to a reconsideration of the nation’s ideals.
Socialist Republic of Paxlume (2023)
By late 2023, the nation had shifted dramatically towards socialism, becoming the Socialist Republic of Paxlume. The earliest recorded constitution dates to the 10th of November 2023, marking the formalisation of its socialist principles. The nation aimed to promote equality and collective ownership, laying the groundwork for future changes.
First Kingdom of Paxlume (20th March 2024)
On the 20th of March 2024, Paxlume transformed into a Kingdom, adopting an absolute monarchy. The leader held full power over the state, and the constitution was revised to reflect this new structure. Despite the change, socialist values remained influential, with the monarchy overseeing the state’s direction.
Absolute Marxist Monarchy (5th May 2024)
On the 5th of May 2024, the monarchy shifted into an absolute Marxist monarchy. This period saw a fusion of Marxist-Leninist thought with royal authority. The monarch wielded total control, but the system aimed to promote socialism and worker empowerment.
Socialist Kingdom of Paxlume (30th June 2024)
The next reform came on the 30th of June 2024, when Paxlume became a constitutional monarchy, retaining the title of the Socialist Kingdom of Paxlume. While the monarchy continued, power was gradually decentralised, and the nation’s constitution reflected a balance between royal authority and socialist governance. However, this structure struggled to gain traction, and the kingdom stagnated in terms of development and participation.
Council-Communist Transition (16th October 2024)
A pivotal day in Paxlume’s history occurred on the 16th of October 2024. Facing growing frustration with the ineffective monarchy, the monarch consulted with an individual interested in reorganising the nation. The monarch reluctantly relinquished the crown, allowing this new figure to become the Chancellor. At the same time, the monarchy was reduced to a ceremonial presidential role, symbolising unity rather than holding executive power.
On this day, Paxlume’s council-communist structure was born. The National Council was established, with citizens actively participating in the new direct democracy. The nation underwent a significant transformation, prioritising collective decision-making and worker control.
Declaration of Independence (17th October 2024)
The Declaration of Independence and the Manifesto of the People’s Republic of Paxlume were formally signed on the 17th of october 2024, solidifying the nation’s commitment to socialism, equality, and direct democracy.
Calendar and Numerical System
Paxlume uses the Holocene calendar, setting the current year at 12,024, recognising the entirety of human history.
Roman numerals are used for all forms of written communication and mathematical expressions, reflecting the micronation’s connection to ancient traditions.
Exception: For practical purposes in digital devices, such as computers and phones, standard Arabic numerals (e.g., 1, 2, 3) are allowed for ease of use. However, in formal contexts (e.g., government documents, academic work, etc.), Roman numerals are strictly observed.
Government and Structure
The People’s Republic of Paxlume is a council-communist direct democracy. Political parties are abolished, and the decision-making power lies entirely with the people, through their participation in local and national councils.
Key Political Structure:
National Council: Elected by the citizens, this is the main governing body responsible for enacting legislation and overseeing the administration.
Local Councils: Serve as regional representative bodies, allowing citizens to participate in decision-making at the grassroots level. Local councils can propose and pass laws which are subject to the approval of the National Council.
President: The symbolic head of state, responsible for representing Paxlume internationally and ensuring the constitution is upheld.
Chancellor: Elected by the National Council to manage the day-to-day operations of the government.
Economy
The People’s Republic of Paxlume operates under a planned economy where the means of production are collectively owned. There is a commitment to eliminating private property and wage labour, with the following guiding economic principles:
Collective Ownership:
All land, resources, and industries are communally owned by the people, with decisions made democratically on how to allocate and manage these resources.
No Private Property:
Private property is abolished. Instead, all property is held in common, and citizens are provided for according to their needs.
Elimination of Wage Labour:
Exploitative wage labour is prohibited. All citizens contribute to the workforce through socially necessary work, and resources are distributed based on fairness and equality.
Basic Needs Guaranteed:
Housing, healthcare, education, and other essential services are provided by the state, free of charge. Citizens are guaranteed these basic needs without the risk of homelessness, unemployment, or poverty.
Sustainability:
The economy of Paxlume prioritises sustainable development, focusing on environmentally friendly policies that promote long-term prosperity for future generations.
Citizenship and Voting Rights
Citizenship:
Citizenship in Paxlume is open to anyone who shares the values of the Republic and agrees to participate in its democratic processes.
New citizens can apply online, participating in a process that includes affirming commitment to the principles outlined in Paxlume’s constitution.
Citizenship is not tied to birthright or residency, given the virtual nature of Paxlume. It is instead based on the individual’s willingness to contribute to the collective good.
Voting Rights:
Every citizen of Paxlume has equal voting rights.
Voting takes place via secure online platforms, and all decisions, laws, and leadership positions are determined by direct democratic votes.
Unlike traditional representative democracies, there are no political parties. Instead, citizens vote on issues and candidates directly, allowing for a more transparent and participatory system.
Local councils handle regional decisions, while national-level issues are decided by the National Council in collaboration with all citizens.
