Medoles (/mɛˈdoʊlz/ MEH-DOHLS), officially the Most Serene Republic of Medoles, is a micronation in North America and an enclave inside Canada. The micronation is a peninsula surrounded by Charleston Lake, at the heart of the Frontenac Axis region. It has a land area of approximately 0.25 square kilometers and a population of 6 as of 2024.

Founded on 24 January 2024, Medoles takes its name from Medoles Point, one of the key geographical features of the area. The name might have derived from the word medole, defined as soft and juicy essence of a plant. It likely relates to the soft nature of the soil at Medoles Point. It came into existence through its 3 founders: TheArtistTree, X-Man & Helium.

History

TheArtistTree, X-Man and Helium dedicated themselves to calling for independence and breaking away from Canada. On 24 January 2024, this led to the foundation of the Most Serene Republic of Medoles. Their cause started by claiming "Why Island" but grew and extended its reach to the peninsula south, engulfing the "Shoreline Trail." In early June of the same year, they opened its borders to the world and its citizenship applications before holding their first series of elections.

Politics and government

Medoles is a presidential constitutional democracy with three branches: Executive, legislative & judicial. Those branches are each led by distinct electoral positions with varying roles in the government and its politics. The mayor, the authority figure in the legislative branch, is tasked to create and forward legislation to the parliament to vote on. The legislations approved by the parliament are then handled by the judge, at the helm of the judiciary branch, who reviews the legislation under a constitutional lens. They can, as well, administer the rights of their citizens through the justice court. Those legislations passed by both the legislative and judicial branches are put into action and enforced by the President with the help of the Medoles Police Department (MPD) as the executive branch. Elections for each position are held through an alternative vote.

President

The President of Medoles is the head of state and head of government of the Most Serene Republic of Medoles. They are the leading figures in charge of the executive branch, including the Medoles Police Department (MPD). They are in charge of foreign affairs, enacting and enforcing passed legislation and administering the police department. The president is elected through presidential elections with a month-long term.

Mayor

The mayor of Medoles is the head of the legislative branch in the government of the Medoles. They are in charge of creating and putting legislation to a vote on which the parliament can pass or reject. The mayor is elected through a mayoral election whose term lasts one month before re-election.

Judge

The judge of Medoles is at the helm of the judicial branch of the Medolite government. As such, they have to review and analyze legislation passed by the parliament if deemed constitutional before officializing it and forwarding it to the executive branch. On top of that, they assess and protect the rights of individuals through a trial of the court. The judge is an elected position that lasts until the current judge is impeached or resigns. Judicial elections would follow and be held on the first week available.

Parliament

The Parliament of Medoles is the legislative body of the micronation. As a direct democracy, everyone with Medolite citizenship is part of the parliament. Their main task is to vote on legislation proposed by the Mayor and whether they should be passed or rejected.

Political parties

As of 2 July 2024, there aren't any active political parties in the Most Serene Republic of Medoles. In the first presidential election in June 2024, the Conservative Party of Medoles, or the CPM, was present and won the elections. Unfortunately, the party quickly dissolved following the departure of its leader, Sabermoose.

Geography

Medoles is an enclave surrounded by Canada in North America, within the province of Ontario and around 14 kilometers away from the Saint-Lawrence River. The micronation is located in the Frontenac Axis region, an extension of the Canadian Shield. The area is relatively rocky and hilly and surrounded by the Charleston Lake in the West, East and North. Medoles Point and Buckhorn Point are some of the named geographical features of Medoles.
