The Goose Island Federation, more commonly known as Goose Island, is a self-proclaimed proto-state located in the United States. Established on August 15 2024 by Caleb Sneeden, it claims the Chicagoan Goose Island in the state of Illinois as its base of operations.

Etymology

According to Perry Duis, a late professor of history at the University of Illinois in Chicago, the name of Goose Island was originally applied to a smaller natural island that served as a seasonal home for local birds.[1] This island was dredged away by the end of the American Civil War, replaced by an artificial island.

History

The first known inhabitants of the natural Goose Island were Irish squatters in the 1840s.

Politics and government

Political Parties do not exist in Goose Island.

Due to the small size of the island and commune-based administrative structure, the Federation has no subdivisions.

Law and order

Military

The Goose Island Federation has no standing military. In the tradition of previous anarchist projects, such as the Zapatistas, Goose Island could accommodate the presence of a volunteer militia if and as the need arises.
