The Democratic Republic of Marsteller (DRM or Marsteller) is small, 2 acre2, micronation in south-east Arizona. Its exact location is undenounced, but is confirmed to be within Pima County, Arizona. The micronation currently has 2 residence and an additional 5 citizens. The country is divided into two provinces, the larger Ranchito and the smaller Roadsland. The peoples of Marsteller originally came from a group who practice the Lakota ways, going back as far as 1987. Within more recent years, one of the medicine man (or roads men) from this group, Grandfather Victor II, began his own group after earning his title of grandfather (or medicine man). Over the years, the group dwindled to between 5-15 members, which practiced several Lakota beliefs and traditions. He would refer to this group as his Skeleton Crew. His son, Peace Chief Victor III decided to establish the Skeleton Crew as the Democratic Republic of Marsteller, April 2, 2021.

The group already had a political system prior to the formation of governance. The nation is a Democratic Republic, the representatives being The Council. People have a right to vote and express their opinions on different matters, but ultimately final decisions comes from The Council. The council consists 5 members: Grandfather Victor II (or Grandfather), Clan Mother Rebecca (or Hummingbird Mother), War Chief Cordell/Cory, Peace Chief Victor III, and Fire Keeper Uriel. Grandfather Victor has the greatest control of ceremonial decisions and decisions regarding infrastructure in Marsteller. Many decisions are unanimous among The Council and there is no specific leader or ruler, but Grandfather would be the closest thing to a single leader.

The Democratic Republic of Marsteller is currently not looking to create formal diplomatic relations with other micronations. Marsteller does, however, seek to befriend other micronations. The peoples of Marsteller highly respect the peoples of the Republic of Molossia. They view fellow desert-dwelling micronations as highly admireable peoples. Despite this, Marsteller is trying to avoid inter-micronational relations overall until they better establish their country.

Etymology

The name of the country derives from the roads that lead to the mountains south of Marsteller. Though the roads don't necessarily lead to Marsteller, it is one of the names given to the land by Grandfather Victor II. The Democratic Republic is simply the type of country Marsteller is. The name for the flag, Ayúštaŋ Hohú, is Lakota for Desert Bone. Its rough translation being Skeletons of the Desert.

Flag

The flag (Ayúštaŋ Hohú) was created as representation of the Lakota ceremonies practiced by the Marstellians.

Symbolism

The green background represents the mother earth, that the people of Marsteller walk on and rely on. The dark red triangles represent the sacred four directions. The red stripes represent the road (native american practices) and Mitakuye Oyasin (we are all related), under our skin and hair we are all red. The light blue represents the sky, protecting the people from the dangers of space, and bringing water. The light red represents the north and the medicine and the healing. The yellow represents the east and the knowledge and clarity. It also represents the rising sun, that brings the people warmth. The white represents the south and the strength and the support of the ancestors. The black represents the west with the courage and the strength. It also represents the night and the rising of the grandmother moon. Finally, the darker blue represents the water that the people and all the creatures that live in the desert need to survive.

Respect

The Marstellians will give the flag as a sign of respect to peoples they admire. Though no physical flags have been produced, Marsteller should begin producing them by the end of 2021.

History

The peoples of Marsteller originate from a larger group that practices the Lakota traditions. The establishment of the country was based on a sub-group formed by Grandfather Victor II, a medicine man (or roadsmen).

Origins

The peoples of Marsteller originally came from a large group who practice the Lakota ways. One of those members, Grandfather Victor II was learning to become a medicine man from his symbolic Grandfather, Grandfather Hawk. After many years of hardship, devotion, and learning, Grandfather Victor II gained the title of Grandfather. Over the years, the larger group began to dissolve into smaller groups. Grandfather Victor II would continue to help people by performing ceremonies and cleansings on his own. Then over the years, the group became a small 5-15 members who were notably his family and friends. He would refer to this group as his Skeleton Crew. His son, Peace Chief Victor III, decided to establish the Skeleton Crew as the Democratic Republic of Marsteller, April 2, 2021.

Formation

The Skeleton Crew was already structured like a nation prior to the official formation of the Democratic Republic of Marsteller. As a result the government's structure was already well set. The formation of the micronation was for fun and to get to know other micro-nationalists. The official date of creation, though, was April 2, 2021. Peace Chief Victor III formed the micronation and also does all the work when it comes to the actual micronation. Things like the flag, anthem, national symbols, websites, diplomacy, things along the lines of these are under the control of Peace Chief Victor III.

Recent Developments

The micronation is still relatively new, so developments are limited as of now (April 7, 2021). There are some developments though regarding infastructure.

  • Grandfather Victor II is working on hiring a contractor to upgrade the temezcal to red brick. The price of 25k - 30k is stirring up some controversy in The Council, but everyone is on board with the concept.
  • Grandfather Victor II plans on adding walls around the place of prayer in the future, but there is some controversies here as well.
  • Proper outdoor bathrooms, changing area, and refined kitchen area may be constructed in the years to come.
