Calconian culture is founded upon 5 principles: survival, truth, nature, agriculture, and love. The local culture stems from Viking, Slav, American, and other groups. People here desire to work hard and also follow similar Calconic values. Calconic values are a spinoff of Western values, with a twist to it. On January 2, 2024, King Karlas has recognized Orthodox Christmas as an official, national holiday. Mainline Christmas will still be celebrated along with Orthodox Christmas.

Languages

There are three official languages of Calcon: English, French, and Calconian Neo Dacian. English is used for communication of foreign relations, trade, and thinking greater ideals.

French is official because the Monarch has picked up on quite a bit of it over many months. Calconian Neo Dacian is the local conlang that serves to bring an identity to the Calconian people.

List of languages spoken in Calcon

Language Native Name Status
English English language Dominant, used in business, diplomacy, and most actions
Calconian Kalkoniče dendzas Used as a cultural language to create an identity, previously to restore the Dacian language; this is a new version of Calconian
French La langue française Minor uses, some diplomacy and culture

Government

The government of Calcon is an absolute monarchy. There is the Constitution and then just laws.

Calconian law is directly made from the Monarch, currently King Karlas the 1st. He can write and veto any law according to facts. On March 2, 2022, King Karlas has proclaimed that Calcon is now an absolute monarchy. Mainstream sources deny this is true, however. On January 24, 2023, King Karlas enacted a new policy of mandating a numeric code in which things are classified into law, which states when that law was made. Law 154312423 means 3:45 PM January 24, 2023, for example.

Beliefs and Customs

  • Dinner starts at 4:30-5:00 PM
  • Lunch starts at 11:00 AM
  • Showers are taken after sunset to save electricity.
  • Pasta water is used for sensitive plants during shoulder seasons to strengthen them to grow despite of the conditions. This also saves even more money on water, along with water collection.
  • Breakfast ranges from 7:30-10:00 AM, usually very light
  • Trees are very much respected as part of the country, like a person in a way.
  • Calconian society is known to make every use of what is available, unlike current Anglo societies, which waste so much potential in warm temperate to subtropical climates.
  • Ozzentide, or ozzentime, is a seasonal event that has mild weather in the winter, typically between 55 and 65 degrees F for atleast 6 hours per day for about a week per month minimum. The term comes from the Russian word osen, meaning autumn, due to the holiday being made in the fall. Also, dandelions are likely to spawn and as well as the prime range of growing peas. So, if this time is longer, then peas are planted along with winter vegetables.
  • Cool-season grasses are starting to become a trendy alternative to mulch and gravel to make paths, atleast near raised beds and other garden beds. However, some paths are still mulchy, either processed or natural pine needles
  • Digging up good soil wherever it can be found, even right along the house, then inferior-quality soil is imported to fill it in untill it gets to about 6 inches of topsoil if there will be grass pathways, otherwise the soil fills it all up, then a shallow layer of gravel/mulch is placed.
  • Hardscapes are often condemned, especially for the fact of Calcon's humid climate, which makes it possible to grow many things, even within the shade. King Karlas knows that, by his own observations, that flowers can bloom whilst only getting a couple hours of sun.
  • Often times, when a Calconian notices places like Inwood, WV or Connecticut, they would notice of how bare the landscape is during the "winter", when evergreens are known to thrive in such places, like hollies, magnolias, conifers, and even some species of hardy palms.
  • Urban areas are defined as any place with atleast 1,000 people per square mile. Calcon is about 2,500 people per square mile. Anything else is called a locality. In addition, dense rural areas are defined as any place with in between 100-999 people per square mile.

Expressions

Due to its many diverse origins and pickups, Calconian culture has gotten up plenty of sayings and words to describe whatever should be.

"Slab of grass" - refers to the typical Anglo practice of making a land so bare and ill-used that it ends up being a slab of grass, where it is well-kept and barely any other plants to compliment the property, either by masking off the tanness of the "slab", or by planting edible species like fruit and nut trees and berry bushes

"swampy" - humid heat

"Light-up bushes" - broadleaf evergreen bushes in Virginia's woods, particularly in the Piedmont and Tidewater regions, especially noted along I-64 east of Gum Spring

"balmy" - another term for mild, but refering to chilly/cold weather that is relatively warmer and sometimes good enough for growing things, typically about 47-57F

"bloom" - not just flowers, but leafs "blooming" out too

"Former Confederate States" - this term is used for a more accurate description of "the South."

"Palatable temperatures" - refers to how temperatures can be more "palatable" due to the fact that especially peas, the king crop of Calcon, can "swallow" up the less frequent frosts, whilst still retaining colder highs than expected for a prime pea growing season. Example: 50/37F is a more "palatable" winter month than 50/29F

"Bush to log ratio" - refers to how pines grow in Sappato, where the "bush" part is all the way up in the sky, whilst the tree is mostly branchless from the very top of the tree. In contrast, there are truer bush-esque plants that have less of this ratio, due to them being real plants and not a tree that shoots up and produces the "log" part of the ratio. The Carolinian laurasilva is a prime example, and the Virginian one as well.

"Oklahoma syndrome" - when someone foams over 90 °F summer average highs and 70 °F lows and dewpoints being about the same as the summer lows, as well as cold winters, like one would see in Oklahoma, hence the name.

"Symbiotic development" - a system of development in which is a compromise between humanity and nature, even farms as well.

"Kansas-by-the-Sea" - a nickname for Myrtle Beach as well as any non-forested areas along the Atlantic Coastal Plain, referring to the extreme flatness as well as the conservative vote

"Appalachian effect" - how trees can be used to make an area look less flat, even when the terrain is basically completely flat, thus giving a similar effect to towering mountains, a beautiful sight to see

"Village culture" - the essence of people feeling more validated by having a certain role in which is mostly designated towards them, such as a cobbler, miller, or blacksmith, or rather a modern equivalent, a doctor or teacher

"Dogs and children" - a phrase to describe the two main reasonable reasons to have a mowed down, relatively large amount of herbaceous ground cover around a typically single-family detached residence

Cuisine

There has been a push to find more about the genetics of the population to get a proper cuisine into the country. Polish/Lechtic influence may also come in, but that is only for Greater Calcon. Another notable national dish, and the newest popular one is the Hokhab. It means yellow bread in Calconian, referring to the color when mixing the egg yolk into the mixture. Root beer has been gaining some ground as well, even coconuts too..The Hokhab dish is very similar to the Korean gyeran-pang, which means egg bread in the local language.

The recipe for Hokhab is as follows:

1). Preheat to 395 F

2). Mix these ingredients:

1 cup flour

1/2 cup sugar

3 eggs

1 cup water

3). Place mixture into desired baking dish and wait for 35 minutes

Religion

The Kingdom of Calcon used to be a Christian country but has recently made its own ethno-religion. In this faith, there are two main deities: Čalsemma and Safrani. Safrani is the risen spirit of an evil African king who ate half of his people for breakfast. Čalsemma wants to create the balance of different ethnicities, races of people with nature. Birch and maple trees are held sacred as well. During autumn, the trees are believed to be angels telling people to prepare for the "Clearing". This event removes the diseases, weeds, and other pests that occur year-round in the tropics. Spring occurs because Čalsemma allowed life to come back. Not everywhere is perfect which explains why there are extremely hot and cold areas.

All Čalsemma wants is for people to find reality of who they are and what is best for all. Safrani despises Čalsemma's plans and counteracts basically every time. Once you die, you become a birch sapling somewhere in the world. This is why birch trees are considered sacred. It is also said that the word Čalsemma may have a cognate in Greek, which is Charites(Charis), a minor goddess of charm, beauty, nature, and human creativity, which all assume very close to Calconic values. However, Čalsemma is typically masculine and Charites being feminine.
