Geography & Climate

The urban area has a temperate rainy climate, an average of 16.6 °C, with maximum temperatures above 28 °C on some days at the end of spring; On some winter days, temperatures drop to 0 °C in the historic center of the city, to −1 °C in the UNAM and to −5 °C in peripheral areas. The wet season in the city runs from May to November, although the rainfall is higher between the months of June and August. The pattern of rainfall indicates that they are more abundant the higher the altitude of a site. For this reason, the lower parts near the lake of Lake Texcoco tend to be drier than the summits of the Ajusco. In the same way, the altitude conditions the temperature and the ecosystems in the City District. The area that includes the north of Iztapalapa, the territories of Iztacalco and Venustiano Carranza and the east of Gustavo A. Madero is the driest and most temperate region.

Extreme weather events can occur in the city, such as hailstorms, which usually occur between May and September with an average annual frequency of nine episodes, 43 and small tornadoes, which can occur from time to time. Snowfalls were a phenomenon of the sporadic occurrence until the 1920s. The period between 1878 and 1895 was characterized by the presence of cold winters, 44 of which only in 1880 did not present a winter storm.44 As a result of the near extinction of Lake Texcoco and the growth of the city and with it the urban heat island, which cause higher temperatures and that the phenomenon of snowfall due to the lake effect no longer occurs, the probability that snowfall will occur again is practically zero. The last snowfall in the city occurred in 1967 when the population was 7 million.
