History

Stret Merdhin and Channel Islands

The first cities of Stret Merdhin and the Channel Islands were formed on 31 May 2022, granted by the head of state back in 2022 after an agreement with the population of the specific centres and a case was made.

In 2023 the Channel Islands were granted two more cities as part of the governments plan to support the local people and to improve the resident's morale.

Current practice of granting city status

A town council or a town mayor can send in an application to the Pennmenyster, who then makes recommendations to the is-kaderyer and Meternes who then make a final call on if city status will be granted.

Local Government Districts

Since the Local Government Act of 2022 city status has been granted to a number of Local Government districts which themselves are not towns. Each includes a number of towns and villages nearby.

City Councils

Posessing city status does not grant centres any special rights other than permission to call themselves cities and city councils.

Mainland Stret Merdhin

Five out of ten cities are within the mainland of Stret Merdhin and their city councils are a single tier council with the exception of the New Colorio City Council, which is a Unitary Authority.

Channel Islands

The Channel islands holds five cities with their own city councils all being a single tier council. These cities are much smaller in land and population size than the other cities seen in Mainland Stret Merdhin.
