On 30 December 2022, some units of the Ikerlandian Land Army, led by President Uraeens Baabylla launched a coup in an attempt to overthrow the Monarchy, dissolve the Legislative Courts, instate a single-party state headed by Baabylla and grant independence to all provincial independence movements. Popularly known as the 30 December Zlatta or the 30 December coup, it has been the only coup d'état to take place in Ikerlàndia, and it is considered by many as the end of the Liberal/Communist hegemony period of Ikerlandian historiography.

Background

Uraeens Baabylla was the first President of Ikerlàndia, assuming the position after the Kingdom's establishment as a Irennelandian overseas territory in October 2022 following the dissolution of the Waatmaat colony of Leewwyä. As the leader of the Liberal Party, Baabylla attempted to model Ikerlàndia after these two states (and especially the former) as much as he could within the framework of Ikerlàndia's constitutional parliamentary monarchy, adopting Korean as a national language, declaring himself the "Dear Leader" of the Ikerlandians and building a cult of personality around himself.

The coup

In the early afternoon of the 30th of December , Baabyllan forces took over the Baabydeeg Zlatta Enná (the Legislative Palace of the Courts) in Mittyzöegaad and barricated the entrance. As the situation unfolded Governor Iker Rodríguez and Queen Irenne I were contacted by former Governor and Rodríguez's assistant Aisha Camara to receive orders on how to proceed; Irenne forwarded the responsibility to Prime Minister of Irennelàndia Teddyä Poppoplaat, who suggested a diplomatic approach to the situation. Rodríguez was unable to reach Mittyzöegaad in time.

After Baabylla refused to talk, Poppoplaat adviced the Queen to use force, and so royal army forces were commanded to surround the Baabydeeg Zlatta Enná and seige the Baabyllists' hold. Sensing defeat, Baabylla (escorted by his bodyguard, Air Force Brigadier Paawwa Waaketta) fled through a passageway out of Mittyzöegaad to Doggat Rurannán, in Northern Ikerlàndia. Shortly after, the Baabyllists in the Baabydeeg Zlatta Enná surrendered.

Baabylla was arrested alongside Waaketta in Doggat Rurannán, now Bai, in the late afternoon of the same day. The President, Waaketta, and Army Generals Kraeenskyy and Ukraeens were all taken to the Santa María de las Cármenes Security Facility in Doggat Rurannán, where they awaited trial. The Baabylla case was the last major legal procedure handled by the Supreme Court.

Aftermath

In Baabylla's place, Gen. Pittujamsä Pelutxinná (Chairman of the Supreme Court) became President, and headed de jure the cabinet until the January 2023 elections could be held. Judicial processes against the perpetrators of the coup lasted until May, when Brigadier Paawwa Waaketta was acquitted of all charges by the Supreme Court. Walker's case was especially difficult to handle for the Supreme Court, due to her actions as Baabylla's personal bodyguard during the coup; the defence argued Waakeetta had acted following her commander-in-chief's orders.

The only individual involved in the coup who was not acquitted of charges was Gen. Saabba Kraeenskyy, due to his use of violence during the coup. He was given a 3 year-sentence and another six months on probation following his release.

The coup is widely believed to have changed Ikerlandian politics. Following the 30th of December, the Ikerlandian population lost confidence in the Liberal Party and its leaders, which led to the creation of the anti-Baabylla Nationalist Party of Ikerlàndia (NPI). At the January 2023 election, Pittujamsä Pelutxinná was elected President on an anti-violence, pro-democracy platform, spearheaded by her party Nationalist Party of Ikerlàndia, which also took an anti-Baabylla stance.
