The United Kingdom of Malvern and Roslyn, often shortened to Malvern and Roslyn and Malvern, is a micronation located on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Malvern and Roslyn was created on 1 June 2018, after the Union Act 2018 was given royal assent. This caused the amalgamation of the kingdoms of Malvern and Roslyn, following the death of Harriet, Queen of Roslyn. The Kingdom consists of two provinces, Malvern (founded 2017) and Roslyn (founded 2011).

History

2010's

On 4 September 2010, a MW 7.1 earthquake hit the region, causing moderate damage to infrastructure and buildings, including Alexander Palace. On 22 February 2011 a second earthquake hit, but caused no damage to the Malvern region. However, the nearby city of Christchurch was devastated, with the loss of 185 people.

On 6 July 2011, the Kingdom of Roslyn was proclaimed by Harriet, Queen of Roslyn. She ruled over Roslyn until her death on 18 April 2018. Upon Harriet's death, she was succeeded by Henry, King of Malvern. Henry became the first king of Roslyn and its second monarch.

On 9 October 2017, the Kingdom of Malvern was proclaimed by Henry, King of Malvern.

On 1 June 2018, the Union Act 2018 was given royal assent by Henry, amalgamating the kingdoms of Malvern and Roslyn into the United Kingdom of Malvern and Roslyn.

Government and politics

Malvern and Roslyn is an absolute monarchy, with an executive council advising the monarch. Henry is the King of Malvern and Roslyn and thus the head of state. The king can exercise the Crown's prerogative powers, such as reviewing cases of injustice and making appointments of ministers, ambassadors, and other key public officials, and in rare situations, the reserve powers (e.g. the power to dissolve the executive council or refuse the royal assent of a bill into law). The powers of the monarch are not limited by constitutional constraints, and they can be exercised without the advice of ministers.

The Executive Council is the advisory body of Malvern and Roslyn. The Executive Council is divided into three parts: Cabinet, government departments, and state service departments. The monarch appoints ministers and members under advice from the Chancellor of Malvern. Cabinet, formed by ministers and led by the monarch, is the highest advising body in government and responsible for deciding significant government actions. Members of Cabinet make major decisions collectively and advise the monarch and are therefore collectively responsible for the consequences of these decisions. Government departments, formed my members do not hold as much political leverage as Cabinet does. They contain portfolios that are not required for essential daily running of the government. State service departments are agencies that act upon the wish of Cabinet

Foreign relations and military

Malvern and Roslyn have unofficially adopted a a stance of isolationism, and as such has not formed any alliance with other micronations or joined in membership with any intergovernmental micronational organisation. Although isolationism has been an unofficial stance of Malvern and Roslyn's foreign policy, Foreign Affairs Minister George Spencer has not ruled out a change in stance of this policy.

Due to Malvern and Roslyn being an isolated and peace-keeping nation, the country does not have a permanent military force. Malvern and Roslyn do not have a military history and has not entered in any wars or disputes.

Geography and environment

Climate

Malvern

Malvern, being located in Canterbury, often experiences a weather event known as a foehn wind. This strong, hot and dry wind is most common in spring and summer, and on occasion reaches damage-causing strength. The wind carries downwards across the Canterbury Plains, often resulting in hot and dry conditions. This causes the temperature to increase to approximately 25 °C - 35 °C. During winter, southerly winds can cause the temperature to drop below zero, bring heavy frosts and occasionally snow.

Roslyn

Due to Roslyn being situated further south, it experiences a more cooler climate. Roslyn is situated on a bluff, in the Otago Peninsula, and is often receiving prevailing southerly winds that come from Antarctica. The climate is temperate but can vary largely at different times of the year.

Economy

The economy of the United Kingdom of Malvern and Roslyn is heavily determined by the New Zealand economy. With this, the Kingdom does not have its own currency, and thus uses only the New Zealand Dollar (NZ$).
